Out of 4 young plants, 1 did not survive. The others have grown very well, bloomed, and appear quite robust. Very pleased and looking forward to seeing their future growth.

Description

Leucanthemum x superbum 'Becky' is a large, vigorous and sturdy daisy with big white flowers and bright yellow centres. It is essentially a variety with the same health as the wild species that blooms in June in our countryside, but with more spectacular flowering that lasts into summer. It is an excellent garden perennial, a versatile and carefree plant that won't disappoint, even for beginner gardeners. It thrives in well-prepared which is not too dry, even clay and heavy soil and is one of those summer queens, with a charming and essential presence in flower gardens and wild bouquets.

The genus Leucanthemum belongs to the Asteraceae family. 'Becky' is a horticultural hybrid with many qualities that earned it the title of 'Perennial Plant of the Year 2003' awarded by the Perennial Plant Association in the USA.  It is derived from Leucanthemum x superbum, the well-known large daisy. It is particularly hardy (beyond -20°C), strong, floriferous, vigorous and disease-resistant. It forms a dense clump, taller than wide. It measures approximately 80 cm (32in) in height and spreads over 50 cm (20in), with a fairly rapid growth. Opulent in summer, it completely disappears in winter. It blooms from June to August, in the form of large solitary heads measuring 7 to 8 cm (3in) in diameter, composed of white ligules surrounding a centre of tubular florets in chrome yellow. The flower stems are numerous and strong: they do not require staking and are perfect for cutting. The leaves are dark green, simple and alternate with regularly toothed edges. The plant reaches full maturity in five years.

This summer daisy, perfect for bouquets, will be ideal in flower beds or wild meadows, under fruit trees or at the boundaries of the garden. Pair its somewhat simple flowers with poppies, blue thistles, paniculate phlox and delphiniums. Mix it with grasses, asters, peonies, blue lupins or bellflowers. The rustic look and intrepid nature of this robust variety remind us of our grandmothers' unpretentious yet beautifully flowered gardens, while adding the pleasure of prolonged summer flowers. Daisies are a beautiful accompaniment to old roses and lilies in bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant Leucanthemum x superbum 'Becky' in deep, loose, moderately moist soil, even clay, which is well-prepared.  This plant tolerates limestone perfectly. It thrives in a sunny position, or at the most a semi-shaded position. It can withstand temperatures below -20°C (-4°F). Regularly remove faded flowers and clear away dead foliage in spring. This daisy can be attacked by aphids, snails, and may show some foliar spots if growing conditions are not optimal. Daisies can be propagated by division in autumn or early spring.

The Oxeye Daisy can be attacked by aphids, slugs and snails, earwigs, chrysanthemum nematode, and may eventually show some foliar spots.
