Description

Leucanthemum superbum Real Glory is a new, very unique variety of Shasta Daisy. Its sturdy stems bear white flowers with a lemon yellow centre from June to September, which are beautifully ruffled. It is a whimsical, like a lemon meringue tart, whose tangy appearance will liven up your beds and bouquets.

Introduced in 2014, 'Real Glory' is a horticultural hybrid obtained in England from Leucanthemum x superbum, the Shasta Daisy that we know so well and which belongs to the Asteraceae family. Its uniqueness lies in the shape of its flower: it is composed of two rows of pure white petals, slightly reflexed, and a dome-shaped centre overflowing with lemon yellow stamens that darken in the middle.

Luxuriant in summer, it completely disappears in winter. The flowering takes place from June to September, in the form of large solitary 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) diameter heads. Its leaves are dark green, simple and alternate with a regularly dentate edge.

It is a disease-resistant and easy-to-grow plant, which you can place in full sun or under light shade. It is undemanding in terms of soil and can adapt to any type of soil, as long as it is well-drained.

The Shasta Daisy 'Real Glory' forms a beautiful clump, slightly wider than tall, about 70 cm (28in) tall and 75 cm (30in) wide. It is a hardy perennial, at least down to -15°C (5°F), with moderately fast growth, reaching full maturity in five years.

In the garden, this summer daisy will be perfect in borders as its flowers last a long time. Combine it, in a harmony of white and yellow, with fairly classic perennials such as Solidago altissima, the immaculate Digitalis purpurea Snow Thimble, or with more unusual plants such as Centaurea macrocephala or Heliopsis helianthoides.

Planting and care

Plant your Leucanthemum in deep, loose, moist, or occasionally dry soil, that is not too rich, but well-drained. This plant tolerates limestone perfectly. It thrives in a sunny, or at the most semi-shaded, position. It can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C. Regularly remove faded flowers and remove dead foliage in spring. This daisy can be attacked by aphids, snails and may have foliar spots.
