Description

Nicknamed Kansas Gay Feather due to their long feathery spikes with flowers opening from the top rather than the base.  This perennial plant has a compact, rhizomatous rootstock resembling a corm, which allows some to sell them 'dried' like a bulbous plant.  However, Liatris rhizomes do not tolerate prolonged drying out, so we have chosen to sell them in their soil ball. However, as Liatris rhizomes cannot withstand prolonged dryness, we have chosen to market them with their soil ball.

This plant has upright stems resembling those of L. spicata, but more vigorous and thicker. They bear long spikes of feathery, pinkish-purple flowers.

Planting and care

Although many species are native to wet meadows, they do not tolerate clay soil. They require a permeable, well-aerated, stony or sandy soil, which is moist to wet during flowering, and drier in summer.
