Description

Lupinus 'The Chatelaine' is a perennial plant with a bushy habit. From June to July, terminal spikes measuring 20 to 60cm (8 to 24in) long appear, composed of flowers similar to those of peas. The bi-colored flowers are pink and white and measure 1 to 3cm (1in) long. It is a very hardy plant that spreads without aggression.

At maturity, the plant can reach a height of 90cm (35in). It is vigorous and resistant to diseases. Native to the Mediterranean region, North Africa, and all of America, this lupin has deciduous foliage that is mainly composed of palmate basal leaves, divided into lanceolate leaflets, which are often slightly hairy on the underside.

Lupinus 'The Chatelaine' is a good ground cover plant. It grows in dry meadows, hills, open forests, coastal strips, cliffs, and riverbanks. It is an excellent plant for borders of perennial beds and flower beds. It also thrives when planted individually.

Planting and care

Lupinus 'The Chatelaine' thrives in the sun, partial shade, and even under trees in spring. Place it in light, well-draining, humus-bearing, and moderately moist soil. It is an easy-to-grow perennial. Protect the base of the plant in regions with harsh winters. Remove faded flowers, and the lupin will bloom again in autumn. Water it generously. Pay attention to the leaves, which can sometimes be attacked by mildew and root rot (especially if the roots are dry). Additionally, lupins can be susceptible to leaf spots, galls, viruses, and attacks from snails and slugs during the growing season.
