I received the plant a month ago: it is in a pot on my terrace and the stems are turning black with white powder on the leaves that have been drying up for the past two weeks. I was completely rebuffed on the phone by one of your employees. Outrageous considering the replacement guarantee!

Description

Monarde 'Prärienacht', which belongs to the fistulosa group, is an herbaceous perennial plant with a rounded clump habit. From July to October, upright stems bear fragrant flowers, grouped in terminal whorls, measuring 2 to 3cm (1in) in length. These flowers are deep purple in colour and have two lips: an upright upper lip shaped like a helmet and a lower lip that is more spreading and divided into three lobes. The flowers of this bee balm attract bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies.

The leaves are deciduous. They measure 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) in length and have a lanceolate (lance-shaped) and dentate form. They turn green, with prominent veins. These are aromatic leaves used for scented sachets and potpourri. The plant can also be used as a tea plant. It is also called Oswego tea.

Originating from eastern North America, this plant is very hardy. It can reach a height of 90cm (35in). It is found in meadows, forests, and copses. Its flowers are used as cut flowers. It is a medicinal plant. The plant's oil is used in aromatherapy to combat depression and strengthen the immune system. However, it is primarily an ornamental plant, and its medicinal properties should not be used without medical advice as it can produce side effects.

Planting and care

It thrives in full sun and tolerates light shade. Plant it in fairly rich, light, moist to wet but well-drained soil. It cannot tolerate soil drought, even for a few days. It does not like even the slightest trace of salinity in the soil. Do not let the soil dry out in summer and protect it from excessive winter humidity. Remove faded inflorescences to prolong flowering. Cut back the dry clump once it is no longer decorative, at the latest by the end of winter. Bergamot is susceptible to powdery mildew during hot and dry summers. In this case, treat or cut back the clump. It can also be attacked by slugs in spring.
