Wonderful! It has produced two beautiful peonies for me this year, having been planted last year. I adore them.

Description

The 'Buckeye Belle' Peony is a perennial herbaceous plant, remarkable for its semi-double flowers of a reddish-brown colour, with yellow stamens.

This wonderful peony was voted the best Peony of the year 2010 by the American Peony Society.

The 'Buckeye Belle' Paeonia produces chocolate-red flowers of 15 cm (6in), semi-double. The petals in the centre are crinkled and reveal bright yellow stamens. Its stems make it a perfect cut flower that will bring colour into your home during the months of May-June. This herbaceous peony can reach 85 cm (34in).

Undemanding regarding soil type and exposure, it is quite easy to maintain.

Not liking competition, the peony will thrive when given plenty of space without other plants nearby.

Planting and care

Peonies don't like to be moved so you have to think carefully about the right place to locate them. The best time to plant is in the autumn. Plant them in the sun or in a bright location, spaced 60cm (24in) apart. They need space and fear competition from other species. Prepare a hole of 50 x 50 x 50 cm (20in), mix organic fertiliser with your soil, partially backfill the hole, place your plants inside and cover with 6 cm (2in) of soil above the eyes. After planting, tamp down and water generously. Our bouquet tip: Cut your peonies at sunrise when the buds start to colour.
