Description

The Nymph Peony is a herbaceous perennial with a bushy habit. It has rapid growth and blooms in May. It produces single, solitary flowers in a pale pink colour, adorned with pale yellow stamens. These flowers are perched on upright stems tinged with red. They are fragrant flowers.

This plant grows up to 90 cm (35in) tall. The leaves are composed of nine lanceolate leaflets, rough at the edges. It has deciduous foliage of a dark green colour, and the leaves are slightly downy on the underside. Native to western Siberia, Tibet, and Korea, Paeonia lactifolia is easy to grow and is an ideal plant for those who don't have time to dedicate to garden maintenance.

Beautiful as cut flowers, they can also be grown individually in lawns, or at the edge of beds or scattered throughout. With a short flowering period and foliage that quickly loses its beauty, peonies can be paired with other perennials that bloom before or after them, such as phlox, chrysanthemums, and roses.

Herbaceous peonies remind us of the scent and beauty of our grandparents' gardens, where they were often present.

Planting and care

Place the Nymph Peony mainly in the sun. In southern regions you should provide partial shade, protecting it during the hottest hours of the day. Plant from September to May, except during freezing periods, in fertile and deep, humus-bearing soil that is moist but well-drained, to prevent the roots from rotting. Easy to grow, peonies require little maintenance. During planting, dig a large hole measuring 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in) on each side and add potting soil, river sand, and peat. Place the collar at ground level. Do not overcrowd the plants to ensure proper air circulation. Keep the soil moist throughout the growing season with regular watering. Peonies are known to be homebodies, so you shouldn't move them after planting. (If you do they have to be divided, otherwise they won't flower for several years). From February to April or October to November, cut the foliage to ground level, taking care with the young shoots. Provide a stake to support the floral stems, and remove faded flowers during the season. Protect peonies from viruses, nematodes, and thrips larvae. Armillaria (honey fungus) can cause rapid plant death, and stem rot destroys shoots and flower buds.
