More information

This vigorous peony, of the "Japanese" type, produces semi-double cup-shaped flowers, measuring 16-18 cm. Their colour is a bright raspberry pink, fading over time, and the flower opens up to reveal a large heart of bright yellow stamens. The foliage is a fairly dark green and the stems are sturdy enough to not require staking. An unusual variety that blooms fairly early in the season, between May and June.

Description

The Paeonia lactiflora 'Raspberry Charm' is an unusual herbaceous peony, both in the "Japanese" shape of its semi-double flowers and in their vibrant raspberry pink colour. It is a robust plant that develops strong stems that do not require staking. With its vibrant presence in borders, this variety is also ideal for the cutting garden thanks to the length of its stems. A favourite among enthusiasts of unusual peonies!

Herbaceous and hybrid peonies are mainly derived from Paeonia lactiflora, a perennial plant native to central and eastern Asia (from eastern Tibet, northern China, to eastern Siberia), where it naturally grows in woods and meadows. This plant now belongs to the peony family. Its deciduous foliage emerges in spring and disappears in autumn. It grows from a large, fleshy root that does not appreciate being disturbed.

The Paeonia lactiflora 'Raspberry Charm' is a hybrid cultivar registered by Charles Klehm in the United States in 1985, it is a "little niece" of the excellent peony 'Coral Charm'. This perennial plant, with an upright habit, reaches a height of 90 cm to 1 m when in flower. It stands out for its relatively fast growth for a peony and its strong stems that do not require staking. The semi-double flowers, 16 to 18 cm in diameter, are very contrasting, with petals of a bright raspberry pink arranged in a cup around a large cluster of golden stamens. The flowering of this variety starts around May 15, earlier or later depending on the climate. The long and sturdy stems bear a main bud and a few lateral buds, ensuring an extended flowering period. The dark green foliage perfectly enhances the flowers. The entire vegetation disappears in winter, while the buds that will develop in spring persist at ground level.

The Paeonia lactiflora 'Raspberry Charm' is as beautiful in the garden as it is in a vase. It can be planted in borders and perennial beds. Mix it with peonies like 'Sarah Bernhardt', 'Karl Rosenfield', 'Festiva Maxima', and 'Bowl of Beauty'. Plant forget-me-nots between these lush perennials to lighten the scene, and plant lady's mantle at the front of your border. Together, these plants will create a botanical tableau that is both elegant and joyful.

Planting and care

The best time to plant 'Raspberry Charm' peonies is in the autumn. Plant the peonies in full sun or in a bright location, spaced 60 cm apart. They appreciate cold winters that promote dormancy and flower formation. The soil should be loose, deep, fertile, and moist. They need space and are sensitive to competition from other species. Prepare a hole measuring 50 x 50 x 50 cm, mix organic fertiliser with your soil, partially fill the hole, place your plants, and cover with 6 cm of soil above the buds. After planting, tamp down and water generously. Do not disturb them any more, let them establish at their own pace.

Our bouquet secret: Cut your peonies at daybreak, when the buds start to colour. Don't delay putting them in water.
