Description

Paeonia 'Canary Brillant' is a beautiful herbaceous peony with semi-double salmon-pink flowers with creamy reflections.

This opulent perennial peony has alternate and compound deciduous leaves with green leaflets. In May, it bears large solitary semi-double flowers, 20cm (8in) in diameter, at the ends of long semi-rigid stems measuring 80cm (32in) in height.

'Canary Brillant' dislikes heavy soils saturated with water, especially in winter. Improve your garden soil with sand and compost. Apply compost every year in March. Avoid permanent mulching to prevent diseases. A location with filtered sunlight is ideal for a beautiful flowering.

'Canary Brillant' should be planted in groups of 3 plants in a shrub or perennial bed. It pairs beautifully with irises or roses. The cut flowers in a bouquet are stunning.

Tip: Herbaceous peonies should not be planted more than 3cm (1in) deep, otherwise it will take several years for them to bloom again.

Planting and care

Plant from mid-September to April, with a spacing of 80cm (32in), in fertile, deep, humus-bearing, moist but well-drained soil. Choose a sunny but not scorching location, with partial shade in hot climates. Avoid permanent mulching, as it can cause diseases, and apply rose fertiliser or compost in March. Pruning is unnecessary, but remove faded flowers and stained parts to prevent fungal diseases. Divide old clumps in autumn, but only if the plant becomes overcrowded. Be careful, as it has fragile roots and dislikes being moved. After this operation, it may not flower for several years. Cut the foliage to ground level from February to April or from October to November. Also, provide a support stake for the floral stems.
