Description

The Itoh Peony Callie's Memory is a beautiful double peony, slightly fragrant, with petals in a lovely gradient of cream yellow and peach with blood red splotches.

This opulent perennial peony has deciduous, alternate leaves composed of green leaflets. In May the large solitary double flowers, 15 to 17cm (6 to 7in) in diameter, are borne at the end of a long semi-rigid stem 80cm (32in) tall.

The 'Callie's Memory' Peony dislikes heavy waterlogged soils, especially in winter. Improve your garden soil with sand and compost. Add compost every year in March. Avoid permanent mulching to prevent diseases. A location with dappled sunlight is ideal for beautiful flowering.

The 'Callie's Memory' Peony can be planted in groups of 3 plants in a shrub or perennial bed. It pairs beautifully with irises or roses. The cut flowers are stunning in a bouquet.

Tip: Herbaceous peonies should not be buried more than 3cm (1in) deep, otherwise they will take several years to bloom again.

Planting and care

The Itoh Peony Callie's Memory should be planted from mid-September to April, with a spacing of 80cm (32in) between plants, in a fertile, deep, humus-bearing, moist, and well-drained soil. Choose a sunny but not scorching location, with partial shade if in hotter regions. Avoid permanent mulching, as it can introduce diseases, and apply rose fertiliser or compost in March. Pruning is unnecessary, but remove faded flowers and diseased parts to prevent fungal diseases. You can divide old clumps in autumn but only if the plant becomes overcrowded. Be careful, as it has fragile roots and dislikes being moved; following this operation, it may not flower for several years. From February to April or October to November, cut the foliage down to ground level. Provide support stakes for the flower stems.
