Alas, out of the three poppies, two had sprouted, I planted them but poppies don't particularly like to be mistreated! I won't see what happens next if they have survived this treatment...

Description

This collection of 3 classic oriental poppies forms a mix of contrasting colours. The large 10cm (4in) diameter flowers are perched on stems nearly a metre tall. Plant this collection in any classic, natural or contemporary border.

The collection consists of:

- 1 Perry's white oriental poppy

- 1 Brilliant oriental poppy

- 1 Patty's Plum oriental poppy

Oriental poppies are excellent perennial plants for borders. Behind their large, crinkled petals, lies a very robust plant capable of thriving in poor, rocky and dry soils in summer. After abundant flowering in late spring, the poppy withers, first the flower stems, which can be used in dried bouquets, then the leaves. It completely disappears to enter dormancy in the heart of summer and emerges again in autumn to bloom a second time as soon as temperatures become milder. It only fears one thing, winter humidity; in heavy soils, the solution is to replace the clay soil with pure sand in the planting hole.

Planting and care

The oriental poppy is a hardy perennial plant, capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -20°C (1°F). Like most poppies, it is easy to cultivate. Any type of soil is suitable for it, even limestone, as long as it is well-drained. This plant dislikes heavy, waterlogged soils in winter. The soil must also be deep, so that its long, fleshy, taproot can develop properly. It must be planted in full sun. Perennial poppies thrive in full sun and can grow in any well-drained garden soil. In heavy, clay soils, you should plant your poppy in a hole filled with pure sand in a volume equivalent to 3 times that of the bucket. Remove faded flower stalks and clean up old foliage during the summer, but be careful! Wear gloves because the white latex secreted by the plant is toxic and can cause serious burns if it comes into contact with the eyes!
