Description

The 'Polaris Rose' hybrid Penstemon, like all the plants in the Polaris series, offers flowers with very vibrant and particularly abundant colors. The bright pink campanulate corollas with white throat of this variety are gathered in dense clusters and carried by sturdy stems that do not sag under their weight. This bushy perennial is certainly not the hardiest, but it tolerates drought and adapts to ordinary soil. Brilliant in summer borders or planted in large containers, it is also a wonderful cut flower.

The 'Polaris Rose' Penstemon is a bushy and woody perennial plant belonging to the scrophulariaceae family, just like foxgloves and snapdragons. Like many hybrid penstemons, it is the result of cross-breeding several species, mostly originating from Central and North America. This variety forms beautiful upright and compact clumps measuring 40 cm (16in) to 50 cm (20in) in all directions, with ramified stems covered in abundant lanceolate green foliage. Its growth is quite rapid. The flowering period extends from June to August, developing on the terminal part of leafy stems. The bicolored flowers, in the shape of large campanulate bells, are gathered in tight clusters. They display a pure white color, widely bordered with medium pink, barely tinged with mauve, very vibrant. The flowers of this variety are sterile.

The 'Polaris Rose' penstemon is used in borders or as an edging plant, among perennials such as agapanthus, caryopteris, Rhodoanthemum hosimariensis, and Cape daisies, or mixed with annuals such as love-in-a-mist. It will mingle among the rocks in rockeries (in not too chalky soil) with cotton lavenders, rock roses, or wormwoods. It also performs very well in pots, with proper drainage and regular fertilizer application. Penstemons also make excellent cut flowers.

Planting and care

Penstemon 'Polaris Rose' is not very resilient and can't survive temperatures lower than -7°C (19.4°F) to -10°C (14°F), unless the soil is well-drained in winter, and the base is protected with a thick layer of leaves or straw. To grow hybrid penstemons successfully, it's crucial to have rich, cool to dry, and well-drained soil, especially during winter. They don't like overly wet soils. In cool climates, put the plants in a warm, sunny spot sheltered from cold winds (south or west exposure). In hot climates, choose a semi-shady spot. In very cold regions, it's best to take stem cuttings in autumn. Penstemons don't get specific diseases and don't need much care. When removing faded flowers in autumn, slightly shorten the deflowered stems without cutting them down to the ground, especially in regions where winters are humid. The foliage plays an important role in moisture regulation. Wait until spring (March-April) to shorten branches whose leaves have been damaged by the cold. Water regularly during dry summers to encourage flowering. In colder climates, cover the base with glass or a frame to protect it from severe cold. To rejuvenate them, divide your penstemons every three or four years, but wait until spring to do it.

Care

Pruning instructions During autumn, it's important to remove faded flowers, but make sure to only slightly shorten the stem of the flowers and not cut them down to the ground. This is especially important in regions with humid winters as the foliage helps regulate moisture. Wait until spring (March-April) to shorten any branches that were damaged by the cold. Remember to regularly remove any faded flowers.
