Description

The Phygelius x rectus 'Funfare Wine' is the result of crossing the Phygelius aequalis and the Phygelius capensis. It is an upright bush considered a perennial herbaceous. This perennial forms a clump by producing suckers. From June to October, abundant tubular flowers gather in large panicles, 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12in) long. These flowers, 2 to 6 cm (1 to 2in) in size, are purple. The more favorable the climatic conditions, the more it produces suckers.

The Phygelius 'Funfare Wine' or Cape Fuchsia has rapid growth and grows up to 50 cm (20in) tall. It spreads without aggressiveness. Its ovate leaves are dark green and measure 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4in) long. They are arranged in opposite pairs. The foliage is evergreen but disappears during harsh winters.

It is a plant resistant to temperatures down to -10°C (14°F). Originally from South Africa, it grows on moist slopes and riverbanks. It brightens shaded areas. It can be placed in flowerbeds as well as pots or hanging baskets. It is a good ground cover.

Planting and care

Grow Phygelius 'Funfare Wine' in full sun or partial shade. It even thrives under trees. You can plant it all year round except during freezing periods. Place it in a fertile, moist but well-drained soil. In harsh climates, plant it in a sheltered spot away from cold winds and cover the stump with a thick protective mulch for the winter. Pruning should be done every year, in winter or February-March. Trim the stems that compromise symmetry. Prune the bushes grown for their foliage more severely. Remove faded flowers as much as possible, unless you want to obtain fruits. The plant is prone to Fuchsia Weevils.
