Description

The Polygonum bistorta Superbum or Persicaria Bistorta Superba is a perennial plant found near watercourses. It forms a fairly compact, dense, and upright clump. This robust plant spreads rapidly and is frost-resistant. From May to June, it produces compact cylindrical spikes measuring 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) long, containing numerous small flowers measuring 2 to 5 mm (0in) long. These lovely flowers are a soft pink and last a long time.

The generous clump of Bistort Knotweed consists of large semi-evergreen leaves measuring 10 to 30 cm (4 to 12in) long. The foliage is a vibrant green with strong veins on the undersides of the leaves. The leaves are ovate with undulate margins. At the water's edge, this charming clump floats on the surface of the water. Native to Europe, Central Asia, and Western Asia, it is a Bistort found along the banks of watercourses or in large bodies of water such as ponds. It also suits flowerbeds.

At maturity, this perennial can reach a height of 70 cm (28in). It can be paired with Miscanthus and Lysimachia clethroides. Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) also pairs well with Knotweed. The rhizomes of Polygonum contain saponin, tannins, and potassium nitrate, which have pharmaceutical properties and are used, among other things, in cases of hemorrhage.

Planting and care

The Polygonum Bistorta Superbum likes full sun and thrives in partial shade, but not in overly dry soil. Plant it in ordinary, moist, and well-drained soil, preferably clayey. In spring or autumn, place it in the ground at a depth of 25 to 40 cm (10 to 16in). The Knotweeds should be spaced 50 cm (20in) apart. Occasionally limit the spread of the clumps. In autumn, after flowering, prune damaged and withered foliage and remove faded flowers. Be careful of its sap, which can irritate the skin. With its running roots, the Polygonum Bistorta can quickly become invasive. That's why it is recommended to rejuvenate the plant every 3 to 4 years to maintain control. It is a plant that can be attacked by slugs.
