Description

Phlox paniculata 'David' is a very beautiful, easy to grow plant: of beautiful stature, vigorous and floriferous.  In summer, this perennial offers numerous conical panicles of white, opulent and fragrant flowers. They emerge from foliage which is very resistant to diseases. This charming perennial is a safe bet for a flower garden. Superb in borders, its flowers are simply perfect in bouquets.

Phlox paniculata 'David' belongs to the family of Polemoniaceae. It is a perennial herbaceous plant with a woody stump that develops into a bushy clump with a rather spreading habit, composed of leafy stems. The plant will reach an average height of 1.10 m (4ft) in flower and 40 cm (16in) in width. The stems, stiff and strong, are covered with alternate, simple, ovate and lanceolate leaves, which are bright green, measuring 12 cm (5in) in length. The flowering period extends from July to August, provided that faded flowers are removed. The small pure white flowers have a tubular corolla. They are grouped at the top of strong stems in large dense and conical panicles, very fragrant in the evening. The flowering is melliferous and nectariferous.

Phlox paniculata are perennial plants accustomed to cottage gardens, as their legendary simplicity and generosity are almost unparalleled in perennial borders, to the point that one sometimes wonders what was planted in flower gardens before their discovery. They get along well with Monarda or Marguerites. In a white garden, Phlox 'David' can be paired with airy asters like 'Miracle Blanc', or Aster pringlei Monte Cassino, with daylilies of the same tone, and with roses 'Jacqueline du Pré' or 'Boule de Neige'. The flower bed could also be punctuated with silver or grey foliage: artemisias, cinerarias, Stachys or silver baskets. Phlox 'David' is a top-notch variety for creating your bouquets.

Planting and care

Phlox paniculata are easy-to-grow plants in full sun, in deep ordinary soil that does not dry out. The phlox Bambini Desire prefers a damp and rich soil, even clay soils that have good drainage. It needs sun to flower well. A too dry or too hot environment makes the foliage more susceptible to powdery mildew. Planted in the sun in a climate with hot summers, it will require regular watering and mulching at the base. Pruning faded inflorescences promotes a second flowering at the end of the season. Protect young plants from slugs, which are fond of their tender shoots.
