Description

Podophyllum hexandrum or Podophyllum emodi is a rare perennial with a spreading habit and a tendency to sucker. From May to July, solitary flowers with a diameter of 3 to 5cm (1 to 2in) emerge. These large flowers, with their white colour, consist of 6 petals and 6 yellow stamens. They give the impression of being placed on the foliage. After flowering, fleshy and feathery fruits appear. Shaped like an egg, they measure 3 to 5cm (1 to 2in) in length and are red in colour.

Its deciduous foliage unfurls after flowering. It has variegated shiny green with purple leaves. The leaves, 15 to 25cm (6 to 10in) long, consist of 3 to 5 palmate (palm-shaped) and deeply dentate leaflets. They are attached to the stem by long petioles of about twenty centimetres. When they first appear, the leaves are folded in on themselves, resembling umbrellas.

At maturity, Podophyllum emodi can reach a height of 50cm (20in). Native to northern India to China, it is a very hardy plant. It is an excellent ground cover that will add charm to your garden. It is found in the understorey, sheltered from direct light. It is often found at the base of rhododendrons. This perennial pairs well with Hostas, Meconopsis, Thalictrums, and Rodgersias. Be aware of the plant's toxicity.

Planting and care

Podophyllum hexandrum thrives in semi-shaded or dense shade areas. Plant it in a moist but well-drained, humus-bearing, light soil with minimal limestone content. During planting, add leaf humus to the soil. Protect the plants from harsh winters in cold regions with dry mulch, especially for those planted in flower beds. Slugs and snails devour the young leaves in spring.
