Description

This collection of Polemonium brings an interesting palette of colours and textures to cool, slightly shaded areas of the garden. Polemonium 'Bressingham Purple' has purple foliage and pale blue flowers, P. caeruleum 'Album' has white flowers, and the lower-growing P. reptans 'Blue Pearl' displays intense blue flowers. These perennials will thrive in woodland gardens, cool rockeries, or along pathways if the soil remains slightly moist. Their long flowering period and fern-like foliage are charming.

The collection consists of:

1 x Polemonium 'Bressingham Purple': its dark purple foliage turns bronze and then dark green, contrasting with its light blue flowers. This variety reaches a height of approximately 40 cm.

1 x Polemonium caeruleum 'Album': with white flowers and green leaves, this variety is particularly appreciated as a border plant or ground cover. It can easily reach a height of 30 to 50 cm.

1 x Polemonium reptans 'Blue Pearl': with deep blue flowers and green foliage, this variety is ideal for adding colour to rockeries or borders. It generally reaches a height of 20 to 30 cm.

The Polemoniums in this collection will thrive in well-drained, moist soil rich in compost and in a partially shaded exposure. For a beautiful effect, place the 'Bressingham Purple' variety, the tallest one, at the back of your composition. The medium-height 'Album' should be placed in front, and the 'Blue Pearl' variety in front of the other two, along the edge of the flower bed. Plan for approximately 6 plants per square metre, with a spacing of 30 to 40 cm between each plant.

To enhance a flower bed, border, or rockery composed of Polemonium, you can plant the wall bellflower (Campanula portenschlagiana) at the forefront; its violet-blue flowers and green foliage blend well with the different types of Polemonium. Phlox subulata 'Emerald Cushion Blue' can also be used as ground cover to highlight the white flowers of Polemonium caeruleum 'Album'. Astilbe 'Fanal' is an interesting choice for its red plumes and bronze foliage, which bring depth of colour to the overall composition. Heuchera 'Palace Purple' with its purple foliage can also be an excellent companion. These plants have similar needs in terms of exposure and soil type, which will make maintaining your flower bed easier.

Planting and care

Polemonium should be planted in a soil that remains moist but well-drained, in full sun or partial shade. Polemoniums do not tolerate the combination of high heat and humidity in regions with hot summers. The foliage can burn under intense sunlight. The best results are achieved in regions with cool summers. To prevent excessive spreading of the plant, remove faded flowers. This will prevent self-seeding, promote a second flowering, and improve foliage appearance. Prune the plant in autumn. Polemoniums generally do not need to be divided, they do not like being moved.
