Description

The Primula Japonica 'Apple Blossom' is a beautiful deciduous perennial with large pale green toothed leaves measuring about 20 cm (8in). This candelabra primrose bears flower spikes in the colours of apple blossoms: from May to July, clusters of pale pink tubular flowers with coral red centres appear. This 60 cm (24in) tall perennial thrives in moist to marshy soils. An ideal location would be near a stream or pond, preferably in the shade. With no maintenance required, it spreads and thrives freely. In flowerbeds, it adds height and lightness and can also be cultivated in pots.

Primula japonica, a candelabra primrose species, is a beautiful deciduous perennial whose flowering accompanies spring flowerbeds, complementing the foliage of other perennials that are still in bud. The large oval and toothed leaves are light green, and the bright pink flowers arranged in whorls are staggered in 5 to 6 ranks. Almost all perennials, sometimes annuals, rarely shrubs, primroses display incredible diversity. It's a complex genus that we've been cultivating for 25 years, but to understand the different ways of life of all the rare species, one must spend a lot of time with them and know that they don't forgive any mistakes. They can all be cultivated by a careful amateur. Some are easy to grow, others less so... it's up to you to choose the ones you think you can master the cultivation of!

Vigorous and very cold-resistant, the Japanese primrose 'Apple Blossom' is rather easy to succeed with, but it has its requirements. It thrives in full or partial shade, in well-humified, cool but well-drained soil. In a flowerbed under the shade of bushes or a tree, create a mix by combining your candelabra primroses with small ferns, hostas, and bleeding hearts, for example. It also complements the foliage of heucheras and tiarellas very well. Don't forget to plant some bulbs in your flowerbeds to add spring interest, consider scillas and muscaris, which tolerate shaded conditions very well. For a colourful combination, mix this primrose with the Meconopsis cambrica, which flowers for a large part of the year.

Planting and care

Primula japonica is certainly the hardiest of all candelabra primroses. In our garden, it self-seeds by the thousands in all the wet and shady areas. It only fears limestone and excessively dry soils. When planting, avoid full sun, enrich the planting substrate with humus, and create drainage to prevent root rot by mixing some sand and/or gravel into your planting soil. Allow the flowers to go to seed to see them spread throughout the garden and regenerate themselves, as the lifespan of the plant itself can be quite limited.
