Description

Pulmonaria 'Blue Ensign', 'Opal', and 'Shrimps on the Barbie' are a diverse collection of lungworts offering a range of colours from vibrant blue to pink and violet. These perennial plants begin flowering in April, and continue until June. They all tolerate shade and partial shade, making them ideal for less sunny spaces. Their height ranges from 25 to 30 cm, and they have speckled or marbled foliage, depending on the variety. They lose their foliage during winter and can withstand minimum temperatures of around -20°C.

The collection consists of:

1 x Pulmonaria 'Blue Ensign': with its intense blue flowers, this is the most colour-rich variety in the collection. The foliage is dark green, almost uniform, which contrasts pleasantly with the flowers. Its flowering cycle is similar to that of the other varieties, from early to late spring.

1 x Pulmonaria 'Opal': as the name suggests, this variety has opalescent blue flowers, paler than those of 'Blue Ensign'. Its foliage is speckled with silver-white, adding an extra aesthetic dimension. This variety is more tolerant of slightly dry soils but still prefers a moist environment.

1 x Pulmonaria 'Shrimps on the Barbie': it stands out with its pink and violet flowers, offering a beautiful colour variation in the garden. Its foliage is lighter and heavily marbled, making it an excellent choice for spaces that need a brighter plant.

All lungworts in this collection are versatile and can be planted in borders, containers, or used as ground cover. They thrive in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. The soil pH can range from neutral to slightly acidic. Semi-shade or full-shade suits them best, especially in regions where summers can be hot and dry.

To achieve good results with these perennials, it is advisable to plant them at a distance of 30 to 40 cm from each other. Regular feeding during the growing season will help maintain healthy foliage and abundant flowering. It is also recommended to prune the plants after flowering to encourage the development of new foliage and possibly a second flowering later in the season. Mulching around the plants will help retain soil moisture and protect the roots during the colder months.

For perfect harmony in the garden, several other perennials pair well with this collection of lungworts. Hostas are an excellent option to complement the foliage and bring diversity in shapes and textures. Ferns, with their delicate foliage, add a touch of lightness and also thrive in moist and shaded soil. Hellebores, often called Christmas roses, can also be complementary as they bloom in late winter and early spring. Epimediums, with their delicate flowering and evergreen foliage, can also be good companions as they adapt well to similar conditions. The combination of these plants with lungworts will create a garden rich in colours, shapes, and textures throughout the year.

Planting and care

Plant these plants in a rich and moist to wet soil, add leaf compost if necessary at planting and plant in partial shade. Water regularly during the first season, as it helps the establishment of lungworts, which are then easy to grow. Beware of slugs that love young shoots. In a too dry situation, lungworts can be susceptible to powdery mildew.
