Description

The Lungwort 'Moonshine' is a valuable perennial to bring life to shady areas of the garden. This hybrid cultivar stands out with its broadly silver leaves and pale blue flowers that brighten up the garden in early spring. It is a powdery mildew-resistant variety that will form an attractive ground cover in cool shade beds.

The Pulmonaria 'Moonshine' belongs to the Boraginaceae family, like borage and Siberian bugloss. This horticultural hybrid was selected in the U.S.A by Terra Nova Nurseries for its robustness and unique aesthetics. This rhizomatous perennial plant forms compact, dense clumps reaching about 20 to 25 cm in height and spreading 30 to 40 cm. Its foliage, almost entirely silver, finely edged with dark green and speckled with green spots, creates an elegant backdrop for the pale blue flowers. Flowering occurs between April and May, with tiny bell-shaped flowers appearing in small, trailing, airy clusters just above the foliage. The plant shows good moisture tolerance and is resistant to powdery mildew, making it well-adapted to regions with humid summers. The creeping rhizome of lungworts produces new leaf clumps after flowering, expanding the colony.

Completely hardy, this Lungwort 'Moonshine' is primarily used as ground cover. In winter, in well-protected areas, its foliage is often evergreen. It will bring a touch of light and elegance under trees, shrubs, along facades or north- or east-facing alleys, at the base of sunless walls. It fills shadowy beds beautifully and even thrives under walnut trees and conifers. Plant some spring bulbs in small groups with your lungworts. Perennials like Tiarella cordifolia, Hosta sieboldiana, Epimedium rubrum, and Asarum europaeum also create diverse combinations with lungworts.

Planting and care

The lungworts 'Moonshine' are good hardy perennial plants for the leafy undergrowth of deciduous woods where they find the spring water necessary for their proper development, and as they flower early, sufficient light before the trees have their leaves. They are not afraid of the wood and they all like a humus-bearing, moist, but well-drained soil. This is often the case in a clear undergrowth, where the humus from the dead leaves nourishes them and the tree roots drain excess water. That being said, they also tolerate a shady position on the edge of a flower bed, and manage to grow in clay soils.
