Salvia officinalis Berggarten

Salvia officinalis 'Berggarten' is a shrub with an upright habit. It forms a generous rounded and spreading clump, making it an excellent ground cover. It flowers from June to July. Its flowering consists of bluish-violet flowers that are 1 to 2cm (1in) long, arranged in clusters of 5 to 10 blooms. These clusters take the form of spikes and are borne on tall stems. The flowers will produce fruits called achenes.

The foliage of common sage is evergreen and aromatic. It is composed of large fragrant leaves that are 5 to 10cm (2 to 4in) long. They are greyish-green in colour and have an elliptical shape. The upper surface of the leaves is rough, while the underside is hairy. Opposite in arrangement, they are wider and more rounded than the typical sage. With slow growth, Salvia officinalis 'Berggarten' can reach a height of 60cm (24in) to 1 m (3ft). Very hardy, this shrub is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe and North Africa.

Bees are attracted to it for nectar. It is suitable for summer flower beds, borders, slopes, and sunny walls. It can also be found in woodlands and meadows. In containers, it will enhance your balconies and patios.

The Latin name Salvia means "to heal". It has medicinal properties, and is primarily used for its antiseptic abilities. It is also a culinary herb found in certain Mediterranean dishes.
