Description

The Sedum divergens, also known as spreading stonecrop or divergent stonecrop, is a small perennial succulent, evergreen in winter, ideal for covering a rockery, the top of a wall, or filling the surface of a flower pot. Low and densely packed, it is characterised by tiny round, succulent leaves arranged in an opposite pattern on the stems. Its white flowering is discreet, occurring in late spring. It is a carefree plant that is suitable for dry soils and requires very little maintenance.

The Sedum divergens, or cascading stonecrop or Pacific stonecrop, is a small perennial plant of the family Crassulaceae. It is a botanical species native to the western part of North America, from Alaska to northern California, passing through Oregon. Its natural habitat consists of cliffs and rocky slopes. With a relatively slow growth, this stonecrop does not exceed 10 cm in height and has a spread of 30 cm. Its creeping stems are covered with tiny, fleshy, rounded leaves of medium green. They often turn reddish in winter due to cold or in summer due to heat and drought. In May-June, small star-shaped white flowers appear in clusters. This sedum has excellent hardiness and can easily survive temperatures as low as -15 °C in well-drained soil.

In nature, this spreading stonecrop thrives in sunlight, rocks, and cracks in rocks, where it can live with little soil. Spreading sedums are ideal for mineral scenes, rockeries, and places with thin and poor soil. To accompany them, you can choose, for example, dwarf artemisias, other small sedums, houseleeks, or Delosperma. All these small plants will create a colourful mosaic.

Planting and care

Plant Sedum divergens in light, sandy or rocky soil, even dry, but with good drainage to protect the roots from cold winter moisture. A mix of compost, sand, and garden soil will work well between the stones of a rockery or on top of a wall. Plant it in full sun to enhance the foliage colour. This plant is very hardy, and once well-rooted, it can grow without watering. However, occasional watering during severe drought can improve its appearance. In pots, provide a layer of gravel for drainage. Divide the plant after 3 to 4 years to encourage vigorous growth and prevent it from thinning out in the centre and the lateral stems from collapsing onto the ground. Sedums are very easy to propagate. In spring, take a stem or leaf, let them dry for a few days in a dry and shady place, and then place them in a tray of moist sand.
