Description

Sedum pulchellum is a small perennial ground cover with fine tender green foliage. In spring and summer, it is adorned with pink star-shaped flowers. Its small succulent leaves are evergreen. They perfectly cover all poor soils and easily tolerate drought. It is a hardy succulent, whose astonishing flowering deserves attention. Hardy and easy to grow, this succulent appreciates difficult soils and tolerates drought. Accommodating in any soil, even poor and mediocre, it can be planted along a dry path, in a rockery, or in a pot.

Sedum pulchellum belongs to the Crassulaceae family. It is native to the Southeastern United States where it grows in rockeries on the edge of woods and forests. This robust succulent perennial will grow in any soil, even if it is poor, rather dry, rocky, or slightly chalky. It withstands temperatures below -15°C (5°F). It requires no maintenance and promises to animate the garden with visits from butterflies. Sedums are easy to grow and boast flowers and foliage in various shades that can be used to create multiple palettes, whether in flower beds, pots, or rockeries. They will grow in rich, moist and heavy soils, if you take care to add gravel and place them in full sun. You can plant them along the edge of a flower bed. Above all, they must not be exposed to excessive humidity in winter, nor be covered with dead leaves, as this could cause them to wither.

The pulchellum species presents itself in the form of a bushy clump, 15cm (6in) tall and 20cm (8in) wide, with creeping and erect loose stems. They bear small coriaceous evergreen leaves of a tender green. These shades vary, like most of its cousins in the same genus, depending on climatic conditions and can even turn red at the base of the stems. Its flowering is quite charming. The flower spikes are made up of multiple bright pink flowers that open like starfish. It forms lovely associations with Hens and Chicks, thymes, and saxifrages, for example. Also consider pairing it with the ornamental Oregano rotundifolium 'Kent Beauty'.

Planting and care

Sedum pulchellum likes hot exposures and dry, poor soils. You can plant it in the ground or in a pot in spring or autumn. Ensure the soil is well-drained and add some gravel if necessary. If you place it in a rockery or on a wall, give it a little compost to help it to establish. Afterwards, it will manage on its own.

Take care of it by making sure it doesn't get covered with dead leaves or vegetation residues and by eventually removing faded small inflorescences.
