Description

Sedum spectabile 'Meteor' is a variety of autumn stonecrop, with carmine star-shaped flowers in large clusters. The glaucous leaves form a charming acidic contrast with the flowers.

Sedum spectabile 'Meteor' is a succulent plant in the Crassulaceae family. It is a plant of extreme environments: its advantage lies in its ability to store juices in its leaves and fleshy stems to better mobilise them in case of drought. 'Meteor' is a deciduous variety with an upright habit reaching a mature size of 40cm (16in) in all directions. The opposite leaves are almost tongue-shaped and, along with the stems, are glaucous green. In autumn (September to October), they bear an abundance of small flowers arranged in carmine corymbiform clusters. The flowers, leaves, and stems then create a stunning contrast of colours.

Sedums do not have many requirements. They tolerate poor soil with little substrate, even limestone, thanks to their shallow root system. They should be placed in full sun as they require high light intensity. Plant them in well-drained soil. They can withstand freezing temperatures and periods of high heat and drought. Simple and adaptable, Sedum spectabile 'Meteor' is also melliferous and nectariferous, attracting butterflies for an extra burst of colour. Stunning in flower beds, rock gardens, or simply in containers, it stands out when combined with sedges to create the backdrop of a wild garden. When dried, its inflorescences make beautiful bouquets.

Sedum is said to have healing properties for small cuts, scrapes, or burns. It is also believed to have diuretic and laxative effects.

Planting and care

Sedum spectabile 'Meteor' does not have many requirements. It is satisfied with poor or ordinary soil with little substrate, even limestone, thanks to a shallow root system. The beautiful colours of the leaves and stems are directly dependent on the sunlight and the amount of water it receives. It should be placed in full sun and in dry, well-drained soil to avoid moisture stagnation, especially in winter. It can withstand negative temperatures and periods of high heat and drought. However, it still needs some moisture during its growing period. In pots, provide a layer of gravel for drainage. Prune the clump in winter when it is dry.
