Description

The Sedum 'Sunsparkler Lime Zinger' is a recent variety of stonecrop that belongs to a series of remarkable hybrids selected in the U.S.A, the Sedum Sunsparkler. This small sparkling plant that spreads out like a creeping mat is distinguished by its amazing lime green foliage marginated with red-purple forming small rosettes around the stems. A late summer flowering of bright pink adds to the unique charm of this small and truly easy-going perennial. Without demands and without worry, it only requires a sunny exposure. Install it at the edge of a dry alley, in the rockery, as ground cover around perennial beds or even in a pot on the terrace!

Sedums belong to the family of crassulaceae. 'Lime Zinger', recently obtained in the United States by Chris Hansen, is a hybrid cultivar resulting from different species and varieties of Sedum. This lovely variety was awarded the Silver Medal at Plantarium in 2015. With a creeping mat habit, the plant slowly forms very compact cushions, not hollow in the center, reaching 20 cm in height and spreading over a minimum of 30-40 cm (12-16in). The flowering takes place from August to October, only ceasing with the first frosts. The inflorescences, in flat terminal cymes, are dense enough to partially conceal the foliage. The tiny flowers are born as pink buds, then open up into small flowers of a bright pink. Intensely nectar-rich and honey-rich, they attract many butterflies and bees. The herbaceous, robust, short and purplish-green colored stems emerge from the foliage composed of small round and fleshy leaves, whose unusual color ranges between water green and finely bordered chartreuse green with cherry red to red-purple. The leaves are flat, beautifully arranged in rosettes around the stems. This completely deciduous plant disappears in late autumn and re-emerges from the ground in spring.

A boon for gardens where the soil lacks depth, ideal in flower pots, the Sedum is a plant of the moment. Without any requirement other than sunlight, it thrives enthusiastically in poor soils, is water-efficient, naturally beautiful, and requires very little maintenance. Pair it with small grasses like graceful Stipa, Muhlenbergia, Panicum, certain Carex, as well as gray-leaved plants that often accept, like it, these difficult living conditions. You will create an unforgettable scene by associating it with ground cover thymes (Thymus ciliatus, hirsutus, longicaulis), lady's mantle, small euphorbias, blue fescue (Intense Blue). The 'Sunsparkler' Sedums are absolutely magnificent in pots and in planters.

Planting and care

The Sedum 'Lime Zinger' settles in spring or autumn in a dry, even rocky, and sunny location. It also tolerates heavy or slightly calcareous substrates. However, if your soil is moist or may retain some humidity in winter, do not hesitate to add gravel to the planting hole. Take the same precautions if you want to place it in a container.

Pruning of the inflorescences should be done at the end of flowering or in early spring, in March, if you prefer to keep the dried flowers on the stem for winter decoration. Beware of gastropods that tend to appreciate the leaves and create pretty cutouts in them. If your Sedum tends to thin out in the center, it will be time to divide the stump (approximately every 3-4 years depending on its growth).
