Description

Sedum ussuriense 'Turkish Delight' is a plant from the Crassulaceae family, recognisable by its thick and fleshy foliage which serves as a water reserve. This makes them extremely drought-resistant plants.

The stems of 'Turkish Delight' do not exceed 15cm (6in) in height but spread widely over 25 to 30cm (10 to 12in). It is perfect for pot cultivation, rock gardens, and borders where its ground-covering qualities will be fully expressed. A sunny exposure and light, well-draining soil, even rocky soil, are essential for its good development. Excessive winter humidity could cause its roots to rot. It is an easy-to-grow plant, even in poor and dry soil.

The evergreen leaves, measuring 4 to 8cm (2 to 3in), are rounded and of a dark burgundy, almost black, colour. They will strongly contrast with other plants in the garden and highlight their unusual colour throughout the year.

In August-September, small carmine-red star-shaped flowers appear, gathered in 6 to 10cm (2 to 4in) clusters. They cover a large part of the foliage.

An ecological asset: the nectar-rich flowers attract pollinating insects and butterflies to your garden. A good way to improve the ecosystem of your garden and promote fruit and vegetable production in your vegetable patch.

Planting and care

Sow 'Turkish Delight' seeds from February to June in a seed tray. Sieve good quality compost on the surface to ensure good binding of the seed to its substrate. Before sowing, lightly press down the compost with a plank. Sow your seeds by broadcasting. Cover the seeds by sprinkling compost or vermiculite on top, lightly press down, and water with a fine spray. Place your seed tray in a well-lit area, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 21 to 25°C (69.8 to 77°F). Lower the temperature at night to 18°C (64.4°F) to create a beneficial alternation for germination.

Germination will take from 14 to 30 days. As soon as the plants are manageable, transplant them into 7cm (3in) pots. Keep the compost moist but without excess during growth. Then, 15 days before their final placement, start gradually acclimatising them to a temperature close to the outdoor temperature.

By the end of May or early June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location. Add a bit of compost to each planting hole. If necessary, add some gravel or coarse sand to improve drainage. Space your plants 30cm (12in) apart.
