Description

Sidalcea candida flowers abundantly and for a long time from July to August, with compact clusters of small open white flowers, with blue anthers (stamens). These flowers are 2 to 3 cm (1in) in diameter, carried by tall, upright stems.

The deciduous leaves of Sidalcea form a green tuft. This very hardy perennial is native to the Rocky Mountains in North America. It reaches a mature height of 60 to 90 cm (24 to 35in).

Plant this cousin of mallows in the background of flower beds or in rock gardens. You can make bouquets with its cut flowers. It pairs well with pink phlox.

Planting and care

Sidalcea candida enjoys the sun but not overly hot or dry situations. Plant it in moist, not too chalky, good garden soil. This perennial hates waterlogged soil; protect it with a good blanket of dry ferns or straw during snowy periods. It is easy-going. Cut back the stems once flowering is finished to prevent seed formation and promote new flowers.
