Description

Thalictrum actaeifolium Perfume Star is a superb perennial herbaceous plant with an airy, tall and upright habit and branched stems.  It bears delicate bluish-green foliage and displays a cloud of small mauve and white fluffy pompoms, which are fragrant throughout the summer.

Originating from Asia and belonging to the Ranunculaceae family, this Thalictrum, or Meadow Rue, resembles columbines in its habit and foliage, baby's breath in its appearance, and ageratum in the shape of its flowers. Thalictrum Perfume Star is a vertical herbaceous perennial, of medium height, measuring 80 cm (32in) tall and 40 cm (16in) wide. This variety, with its airy habit, slender, sturdy and well-branched stems, bears delicate and graceful finely-cut bluish-green foliage, which is very light. The fragrant flowers, composed of small star-shaped stamens, in a lilac colour with white tips, are carried in a profusion of airy and fluffy clusters throughout the summer, forming a spectacular pale violet haze.

This meadow rue is the ideal plant to brighten and flower shaded areas of the garden. With its height, airy appearance, and the beautiful pastel colours of its inflorescences, it will be perfect for adding height and lightness to borders. It will create a striking contrast with less delicate perennials, as well as on the edge of shrub borders. It will naturally find its place alongside Hostas, Hydrangeas, English or shrub roses, Fuchsias, Japanese Anemones, Monkshoods, Astilbes, Bellflowers, Japanese Maples, Tree Ferns, Hibiscus, Buckthorn, Snowberries...

Planting and care

Despite its delicate and fragile appearance, Thalictrum Perfume Star is very hardy and low maintenance. It simply needs to be planted in partial shade or even full shade, in a moist to wet soil that is rich in organic matter and well-drained. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost every year to improve drainage in winter and facilitate root development. Also, don't forget to water regularly during dry and hot periods. Losing its leaves in autumn and completely disappearing in winter, it will only reappear in spring, quite late. Therefore, it is advisable not to cut the plant to the ground in autumn, so as not to forget its location in the following spring. A slow-growing plant, it will delight the gardener over the years!
