Description

The Heucherella 'Redstone Falls' is a novelty with coppery red palmate leaves that has the particularity of producing, like strawberries, runners; it spreads out to form large ground cover mats.

A perennial with remarkable evergreen foliage that changes colour throughout the seasons, Heucherella Redstone Falls produces coppery red palmate leaves, veined with a darker red. They take on a copper, russet brown to cinnamon hue in autumn.

This heucherella, resulting from the cross-breeding between Heuchera and Tiarella, provides an airy and early flowering composed of long spikes of cream white in May, reaching a height of 50cm (20in). This plant has excellent hardiness, and is vigorous. In early summer, it produces lateral stems, called runners, measuring 25-30cm (10-12in) in length, which root into the soil and allow it to spread.

The runners also have a significant ornamental aspect as they gracefully trail, when the plant is installed at the edge of a wall or hanging in a suspension.

Easy to grow, this plant requires a rich and moist soil, likes partly shaded and bright areas, but is sensitive to the sun during the hottest hours.

Planting and care

Prepare a planting hole measuring 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill the hole, and place your bucket (after removing the pot) so that the top of the plant's root ball is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Adding a slow-release fertilizer (dehydrated blood, horn powder) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without risk of burning. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate your plant's establishment. The woody stump tends to emerge from the soil, therefore mulch annually. Heucherellas renew their foliage in late winter, so we recommend cutting back the previous year's leaves in January or February.
