Description

Tiarella 'Spring Symphony', a pretty compact groundcover of the undergrowth. Its semi-evergreen foliage, with brown-red veins, is topped in late spring with numerous light stems with pink buds opening white. For light and humus-rich soil.

This variety, which belongs like all tiarellas to the large family of Saxifragaceae, has a very attractive deeply lobed tender green foliage, enhanced by wide brown-red veins. It forms a cushion that will reach about 25 cm (10in) high and 30 cm (12in) wide. Between April and June, the plant produces multiple light and vaporous conical flower stems, with initially pale pink buds giving way to tiny white flowers appreciated by pollinators. In autumn, the foliage often takes on beautiful bronze tones and frequently persists if the winter is not too harsh. It is also capable of enduring short periods of drought once well established.

.

It spreads slowly through its rootstock, and grows well in humus-rich soil, which is not too heavy and is well drained.  It also allows occasional division. These are the conditions that can be found in understorey planting, at the foot of bushes for example. Planted en masse, it will form a beautiful carpet in the company of Heucheras (which belong to the same family) like 'Caramel' or 'Dark Secret', small ferns like Polystichum tsus-simense or Dryopteris erythrosora, or with other groundcover plants such as Asarum caudatum. It can also be cultivated in a pot, in a rich, filtering substrate that does not dry out too much.

Planting and care

Easy to maintain, Tiarella 'Spring Symphony' thrives in all moist, well-drained, neutral to acidic soils. It should be planted in partial shade or dense shade (although the foliage colour may become dull). It must be protected from full sun and excessive humidity in winter. Plant it in loose soil that retains moisture, lightening it with coarse sand if it is too heavy, and consider applying mulch. It does not tolerate very hot conditions.  This perennial tolerates dry shade under trees and bushes. It requires little maintenance and pruning is not necessary except in case of damaged foliage or to rejuvenate the plant.
