Description

Tiarella Sugar and Spice is a magnificent perennial, excellent groundcover with green - burgundy colours. Standing 20 cm (8in) tall, it can add colour to difficult areas such as shaded beds.

The leaves measure about 10 cm (4in) wide, are lobed, and resemble those of a maple. They are shiny, green in colour with a central burgundy spot. The foliage is semi-evergreen. The flowering occurs in May-June in the form of numerous dense spikes of pink flowers at the beginning of flowering, then turning white.

Tiarella Sugar and Spice is very low maintenance, it does not require any special care, but prefers a damp, humus-rich, shaded soil.

This perennial will perfectly complement hostas or ferns.

Planting and care

To plant your Tiarella, work the soil to a depth of 20 cm, crumble the soil well and add bonemeal into the planting hole.  Position your young plant, removed from its pot, by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, fill in and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets.  Tiarellas are easily planted in any good moist soil. They tolerate clay soils, although they prefer slightly lighter humus-rich soils.  Remember to water in the summer, especially during the first season, as soon as the soil dries out.
