Description

Tradescantia (Andersoniana Group) 'Angelic Charm' is a delightful, compact plant from Virginia with bright foliage of intertwined golden ribbons, serving as a backdrop for white flowers. This hardy perennial will bring an original and colourful touch to moist and semi-shaded areas, or along the edge of a pond. It also grows very well in pots.

'Angelic Charm' is a hybrid tradescantia originating from both Americas (Tradescantia ohiensis, T.subaspera, T virginiana). It belongs to the Commelinaceae family. It forms a compact clump 30 cm (12in) high and spreads up to 40 cm (16in). Its superb golden, grass-like yellow foliage emerges in spring and develops into a dense clump. Flowering begins in June and lasts throughout the summer with pure, simple, white, flat flowers that have contrasting yellow stamens which open in pairs and are carried at the top of erect stems. Each flower only 'lives' for a few hours, but they continuously renew themselves above the foliage.

Tradescantia andersoniana 'Angelic Charm' is east to grow in humus-rich, moist to wet soil. This plant prefers a semi-shaded position that highlights its astonishing colours. In full sun, regular watering is essential. Its blue flowers adorned with gold will brighten up all small shaded areas anywhere in the garden. This perennial will thrive in damp areas along streams or ponds with Carex, tiarellas, Persicaria vacciniifolia, Primula bulleyana, or Ophiopogon japonicus. It also grows well in pots, in semi-shade, with regular watering.

Planting and care

Tradescantia andersoniana 'Angelic charm' is easy to grow when planted in humus-rich, moist to wet, slightly acidic, neutral or slightly alkaline soil. This plant prefers a semi-shaded exposure, especially in the south. In full sun, regular watering will be essential. To ensure continuous flowering until winter, cut off faded flowers. The foliage can be cut back to the ground in November. Protect the young shoots from slugs and snails. When the foliage starts to develop brown spots, renew the planting as it is gradually degenerating. This plant does not tolerate the root competition of suckering or stoloniferous perennials.
