Description

We offer you this pair of large periwinkles that brings together the Vinca major botanical species and its white form 'Alba'. These vigorous and extremely robust, perennial groundcovers withstand cold winters and survive dry summers. Their long stems develop rapidly to form a thick evergreen blanket on all types of soil and in all exposures. Many flowers appear between April and June, on beautiful shiny green foliage. Perfect for spreading under trees, bushes or even around large perennials and for covering bare soil.

This pair consists of:

- 1x Vinca major: the wild periwinkle, its 4 cm diameter flowers are a blue tending towards mauve.

- 1x Vinca major 'Alba': the same, with pure white flowers.

The large periwinkle develops long woody stems at the base that root. This means that they remain lying on the ground and produce adventitious roots. This allows it to colonise the surroundings over an area exceeding one square metre if not contained. This should be taken into account when planting. Plant 3 periwinkles per square metre for ground cover in 2-3 years. The large periwinkle is a competitive plant: avoid planting fragile varieties next to it that it could suffocate. It can be planted in spring or autumn in ordinary, well-prepared soil, even limestone. Shade is preferable in the south, a sunnier exposure is more suitable in less sunny regions.

The foliage of the large periwinkles, along with the entanglement of the stems, forms a thick 20 to 30 cm high evergreen carpet. Plant these two blue and white varieties at the base of an exposed wall, on a slope, under a hedge, they will find what they need to feed and develop while providing you with permanent vegetation and natural flowering. In hanging baskets or containers, they will create a beautiful decorative display and can be easily contained. You can accompany them with large spring bulbs that will add volume and height to the scene.

Planting and care

Vinca major establishes itself in spring or autumn in all types of well-tilled soil. It prefers those that retain some moisture, but will also tolerate drought and poor soils once rooted. However, don't forget to water it during its establishment!

It thrives in all exposures and continues flowering (although it may be slightly less generous) in the shade.

This large periwinkle requires no maintenance. You can prune it if you want to maintain a compact shape or to limit its vigorous growth. Be careful not to let it compete with small less robust perennials, as it may invade them.

Its foliage is toxic.
