Description

Erysimum alpinum, also known as the Alpine Wallflower, is a small plant with dark green evergreen foliage that produces small, highly fragrant, yellow-orange flowers for weeks from spring to midsummer. Ideal for rock gardens, gravel beds, and walls, it is also an excellent choice for decorating sunny patios and balconies. Very hardy, it can be easily grown without difficulty in sunny, well-drained soil, even poor and chalky soil.

Erysimum alpinum is a species related to wallflowers. All these plants belong to the Brassicaceae or Cruciferous family. Erysimum alpinum is a hardy perennial, but its lifespan is limited: it is often considered a biennial that flowers in the second year before disappearing. It is distinguished by its compact, bushy habit, not exceeding 30 cm (12in) in height and spreading 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12in) wide, as well as by its long flowering period from May to July.
The particularly generous flowering consists of clusters of small yellow-orange flowers. The flowers are small (1.5 cm (1in)) but gathered in clusters which open successively. Sometimes, there is a small summer rebloom if the plant is pruned. Its dark green foliage, evergreen in winter, consists of very fine sword-shaped leaves. It is also decorative due to the contrast it creates with the flowering. This plant, which requires well-drained soil, will survive our normal winters, but its foliage may be slightly damaged by very severe frost.

Erysimum alpinum is a perfect plant for all sunny, slightly dry and rocky areas of the garden, but also on the patio or in a planter placed against a sun-drenched wall. It can be combined with small alpine Phlox, Erodiums, and other low-growing perennial plants such as creeping Gypsophilas, Cerastiums, Diascias, Stachys, Nepetas, Lobelias, or even with evergreen shrubby salvias.

Planting and care

Plant Erysimum alpinum in a very sunny position in slightly acidic, neutral to limestone, even stony and rocky, well-drained soil. In summer, make sure the soil doesn't dry out too much. Prune the stems after flowering. Erysimum is hardy in well-drained soil, but the evergreen foliage weakens the plant in winter. This plant is very easy to cultivate in a pot, in good horticultural soil, with regular watering and fertilizer for flowering plants.
