Description

Erysimum linifolium 'Variegatum', also known as Wallflowers, is a perennial plant that is not very common in our gardens. Its spring flowers, violet in colour, are accompanied by decorative foliage variegated with cream white. It is ideal for rock gardens and sunny spaces.

Native to the Iberian Peninsula, Erysimum linifolium 'Variegatum' is a perennial plant with an upright habit, reaching a height of 50 cm (20in) and a width of 40 cm (16in). This variety is distinguished by its evergreen leaves, green in colour and margined with cream white.  Leaves have an elongated shape ending in a point and a dentate margin. From May to July, violet flowers will appear in spikes, adding a touch of colour to your garden. The duration of its flowering will depend on the hardiness of the climate in which it is planted: the milder the climate, the longer the flowering period.

Classed as a decorative plant from spring to autumn, it has a moderate hardiness to -7°C (19.4°F). In order to fully enjoy this plant, plant is a sunny position in warm soil in the harshest climates.

Undemanding, it will thrive in a neutral to limestone soil,  that is light and well-drained. It can be accompanied by artemisias, asters or hebes in borders or pots.

Planting and care

Plant the perennial wallflower in a sunny location in neutral to calcareous soil, even stony and rocky, well-drained soil. In summer, make sure the soil does not dry out too much. Cut the stems after flowering. Erysimum is hardy, but the evergreen foliage weakens the plant in winter.
