Description

Erysimum Poem Lilac is a perennial shrub with evergreen foliage and a long and abundant spring flowering. The beautiful purple-lilac colour of its flowers, accompanied by a gentle fragrance, brings life to rock gardens or sunny borders from late February to late June. It is a variety that performs well in containers, pots, and planters for patios and balconies.

Also known as "false wallflower," Erysimum Poem Lilac is a hardy undershrub of the Brassicaceae family. It is a horticultural hybrid with linear grey-green foliage that is quite elegant. It remains evergreen in winter. Its dense and compact branching gives it a regular ball-shaped form of about 30 to 35cm (12 to 14in) in diameter and prevents it from thinning out at the base. It is covered with 4-petalled flowers, gathered in short and dense spikes, starting from late February in milder regions. The flowering continues uninterrupted until early summer if the soil remains somewhat moist, during which it is good to prune it to rejuvenate it. This variety prefers a sunny location in well-drained, even rocky soil.

The flowers come from brown-violet buds and open in a beautiful pinkish-purple colour with salmon reflections before settling into a more purplish shade. Although the flowers are tightly packed on the spike, the flowering of this variety retains its lightness. Used as a biennial, it is an ideal plant to support spring compositions in charming planters, in combination with spring bulbs like the pure white 'Thalia' daffodil, and biennials in pink, purple, white, or blue tones, such as pansies and violas, primroses, daisies, etc.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in planters, containers, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

The plug plants can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in well-prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible after receiving them, in September-October. If the intended location is not ready yet or if the conditions are not favourable for planting (heavy rain or excessively dry soil), you can grow them in pots for 4 to 6 weeks. At the time of planting or shortly after, you must pinch out the tip of the plant between your thumb and index finger to remove the terminal bud and stimulate branching. You can repeat this operation until mid-October to obtain denser bushes.

In pots and containers, use a good well-draining potting soil for flowering plants (for example, with a lot of bark or perlite) and enriched with slow-release fertiliser. The top of the plug should be level with the soil. Water generously at the time of planting and during the following weeks, as the plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful with excessive water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during freezing periods.

From 3 weeks after planting and until after flowering, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants 1 to 2 times a week with the watering water, even in winter (as long as watering is necessary). The faded spikes can be cut with scissors to maintain a neat appearance of the plant, but this is not essential, as the flowering continues as long as the plant is not lacking water. Once the flowering is over, the plants in pots can be replanted in the garden in full sun after being pruned by about 5cm (2in).
