I received three beautiful wallflowers, planted them immediately in large planters in full sun. They did not flower because it was no longer the season, but they were developing remarkably well, with leaves of a beautiful dark green. Then, within two weeks, they abruptly turned yellow, then white, and perished. What a shame!

Description

Erysimum 'Rysi Copper' is a superb variety of false wallflower with large, highly scented flowers, in a soft yet powerful coppery orange colour, perfect for brightening up spring in pots and containers in combination with bulbs and biennial flowers.

The perennial shrubby wallflower 'Rysi Copper' is a sterile variety propagated by cuttings. It forms a small, well-branched bush from the base, slightly taller than wide, covered with evergreen foliage in dark green. Its flowering and fragrance are typical of common wallflowers found in grandmother's gardens, with the difference that its flowers are twice as large and have a unique coppery orange colour, impossible to obtain from sowing. The 'Rysi Copper' false wallflower blooms from late March to June. It prefers a light and well-draining soil, even rocky, but still rich in nutrients as it is a very demanding plant that requires regular fertilization to thrive.

This plant is ideally suited for cultivation in pots, containers, and window boxes, as well as in flower beds. It can be combined with spring bulbs, biennials, and early-flowering perennials such as candytuft, rock cress, and wall rockcress, etc., not forgetting decorative foliage plants such as Heucheras or bronze sedges.

Note: Please be aware that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, containers, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

The budlings of Erysimum 'Rysi Copper' (perennial wallflower) can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible after receiving them, in September-October. If the planned location is not yet ready or if the conditions are not favorable for planting (heavy rain or overly dry soil), you can let them grow in pots for 4 to 6 weeks. At planting or shortly thereafter, it is absolutely necessary to pinch the tip of the plant between your thumb and index finger to remove the terminal bud and stimulate branching. You can repeat this operation until mid-October to obtain denser bushes.

In pots and containers, use a good, well-draining potting soil for flowering plants (for example, with a lot of bark or perlite) and enriched with slow-release fertilizer. The top of the root ball should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as the budlings can dry out quickly. However, be careful not to overwater! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during freezing periods.

Starting from 3 weeks after planting and until after flowering, apply a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants 1 to 2 times a week with the watering water, even in winter (as long as watering is necessary). The faded spikes can be cut with scissors to maintain a neat appearance of the plant, but this is not essential, as the flowering continues as long as the plant does not lack water. Once the flowering is over, potted plants can be replanted in the garden in full sun after being pruned by about 5cm (2in).
