Description

Rosa 'Bantry Bay' is a climbing rose that blooms throughout summer, bearing pale-pink semi-double cup-shaped blooms. Its petals release a very subtle fragrance in autumn. This abundant flowering gives the garden a romantic touch.

This vigorous climbing rose is resistant to diseases that usually affect these plants.

Train your climbing rose on a wall along a trellis, on a pergola, or over arches. To enjoy it to the fullest, place it near areas of passage.

Like all repeat-flowering climbing roses, 'Bantry Bay' requires careful pruning in late winter (see the pruning tab). Pruning is essential for beautiful flowering. Do not prune them too short. Train the stems horizontally, as this will encourage the growth of lateral branches that bear buds.

Bred by McGredy in 1967.

Planting and care

'Bantry Bay' prefers sunny locations. It tolerates excessive limestone, but does not like it. It will adapt to any garden if the soil is well-worked and rich enough. To plant your rose, prepare the soil by crumbling it and adding an amendment (dried blood or dehydrated horn) at the bottom of the planting hole. Water generously after planting to remove any air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate rooting.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this does not affect their growth. These stains are a natural phenomenon and will not harm the rose.

Care

Pruning instructions Start by removing dead wood and old branches that have produced the fewest flowers, then shorten the lateral shoots to 3-6 eyes. Cut at an angle above the eye. Never remove all the old branches or all the young shoots at once. Bend and tie the branches, as each bend will result in a lateral shoot ending in a cluster of flowers. Remove faded flowers to encourage new buds to form.
