Thanks to the team (for order preparation and shipping), the bare root rose I received looks healthy. Planted close to a wall and of the "Jasmina" variety, I am now patiently waiting for it to take root... or not?

Description

The climbing rose David Hockney, created by Meilland in 2022, is a true tribute to the artist David Hockney, famous for his bold use of colours. This charming, robust rose offers a generous and perpetual flowering in delicate shades of cream, raspberry pink, and apricot. It is a versatile variety that can be trained as a climber or a large bush. Suitable for small gardens, it can also be planted in a container on a terrace or a large balcony, trained against a wall, a trellis, or an arch.

This David Hockney rose belongs to the group of modern roses known for their continuous flowering. It has moderate dimensions (1.5 to 2 m in height by 2 to 3 m in spread), with dense vegetation supported by flexible stems capable of covering 5 to 6 m². Its flowers, gathered in clusters of 2 to 5 plump buds, measure about 8 cm in diameter and consist of nearly 100 petals arranged in quarters. Their light and delicate fragrance adds to their charm. The glossy English green, disease-resistant foliage forms a beautiful backdrop for these romantic flowers. This rose is also known for its ability to rebloom very regularly, in successive waves from June until the first frosts. Vigorous but not invasive, it is easy to grow and maintain, whether in the ground or in a container (minimum depth of 50 cm). Its deciduous foliage is absent in winter.

The David Hockney rose pairs beautifully with climbers with large flowers, whether white, blue, pink, or purple, to add some height to the garden or terrace. You can also combine it with English roses such as ‘Graham Thomas’ or ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ for a romantic atmosphere, or with plants like lavenders and perennial geraniums. If you like contrasts, opt for ‘Black Knight’ buddleia or Caryopteris ‘Grand Bleu’. With its generous flowering and flexible habit, this rose can also be used at the back of a border to create an enchanting setting reminiscent of English cottage gardens.

Planting and care

Plant your 'David Hockney' rose bush in open ground or in a large pot, in well-worked soil. Place a fertiliser like dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. After planting, water generously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root establishment. For a beautiful flowering, train the branches as horizontally as possible. Prune perpetual roses at the end of winter, shorten them if their size bothers you, but do not cut them back too much. You can also aerate the branches by removing dead wood and unsightly branches. Remove faded flowers as the summer progresses to promote even more abundant flowering.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These stains are not harmful to the rose bush, it is a natural phenomenon.
