More information

This new David Austin rose forms a bush of good stature, very repeat flowering, covered with flowers from June to frost. Its open roses, almost flat, offer a range of pale pink and rose white. Their powerful fragrance exhales fresh notes of lemon sorbet and softer notes of old rose. A healthy and robust bush produces a continuous flowering for borders and hedges.

Description

The Rose 'Elizabeth' is an English rose created in 2022 by David Austin in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. It is a rose of superlatives: the most floriferous, fragrant, and healthy. Its large, fairly flat roses, with numerous petals, open in generous clusters of flowers in a soft pale pink, warmed by an apricot heart, then fading to a white where a hint of pink can still be seen. They exude a powerful, sweet scent of old roses with fresher lemony notes. This floriferous variety fits well both in mixed borders and hedges.

The 'Elizabeth' Rose is a sturdy, fairly wide shrub rose that, when mature, reaches about 1.40 m (5ft) in all directions. It develops thorny stems adorned with beautiful dark green foliage, relatively resistant to diseases under good growing conditions. It blooms abundantly, reblooms regularly from June until the first frosts, and offers highly fragrant flowers. Its 9 to 11 cm (4in) wide roses are open and almost flat. Their colour is a soft pink when they bloom, gradually fading to white, offering a range of pale and rosy white.

The Elizabeth Rose has a bushy and fairly compact growth habit, ideal for shrub beds, borders, and flowering hedges. It forms beautiful associations with small shrubs, summer perennials, and wandering annuals in a romantic-inspired or cottage garden. Plant clumps of Alliums, vertical perennials like Foxgloves or Linarias, Phlox or Delphiniums, which are more robust. Carpet their base with perennial geraniums or Nepetas. Add some airy plants like Thalictrums or paniculate Gypsophila and ornamental grass foliage. Small annual climbing plants like Sweet Peas or perennial herbaceous Clematis are floriferous additions of great effect.

Planting and care

Plant your English Rose Elizabeth in a sunny or semi-shady location. English roses are tolerant, but they don't like excess limestone. They will adapt to any garden if the soil is well-cultivated and rich. To plant your rose, work the soil well, crumble it, and put an amendment at the bottom of the planting hole, such as blood, fish and bone. Water generously after planting to remove any pockets of air. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate rooting.

Roses at the end of summer may have stains, but it doesn't affect their growth. These stains are natural and do not harm the rose.

Care

Pruning instructions Pruning English roses is essential for flowering. At the end of winter, shorten the branches to 3 or 5 eyes above the ground (at the lowest point), choosing an outward point for a more elegant appearance. Take advantage of this pruning to remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Pruning is carried out in bevels above one eye. As the flowering season progresses, remove the spent flowers to encourage other buds to open up.

Overwinter Can be left in the ground
