Description

The English rose Olivia Rose Austin, which received numerous accolades during its presentation, is, according to its creator, one of the best varieties and one of the most resistant in his entire collection. Its large flowers are like Old Roses, beautiful at all stages of their blooming, opening in light, but very full and large cups. Their petals display a delightful soft pink hue, paler at the edges, and hide an intense fragrance with distinct fruity notes. This rose is named after the breeder's granddaughter, a testament to the attachment he has for her!

This modest-sized rose, but with particularly vigorous growth, will form a well-balanced bush, 1m (3ft) tall and 75 cm (30in) wide. Its sturdy stems are covered with glossy foliage, green with bronze and purple hues, typical of the Leander group, and disease-free. Its flowering is particularly early, and it reblooms 3 times a year, early in the season and until late autumn. On this well-blooming bush, the small bright pink buds that are beautifully incurved open very gradually to form a round and very full flower over 8 cm (3in) in size, composed of numerous petals. They have a transparent and fresh colour, a light and vivid pink, taking on lilac hues when fully open and a delicious and fruity fragrance.

As Wilhem Kordes, the famous German hybridiser, so beautifully said, 'Think that roses are part of these intangible elements that define the level of our culture. (...) Because the rose is the most perfect expression, even the symbol of a noble lady: it is tenderness, beauty, grace, elegance, sweetness, and charm all at once.' A quote that suits this beautiful rose 'Olivia Rose Austin' perfectly, which will find its place in both a romantic and natural garden, or even in a scented garden. It can be mixed with flowering bushes (buddleias, lilacs, spireas, deutzias, mock oranges, kolkwitzias), near the house or in front of a large bed. In mixed borders, it will accompany perennial plants, to which it will bring exuberance and fragrance, lightweight annuals, and even grasses, whose tufted foliage will cover its base.

Planting and care

Plant your English Rose Olivia Rose Austin in a sunny or lightly shaded position. English roses are tolerant but they will not like excessive chalk. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked and rich enough. To plant your rose, prepare the soil by breaking it up well and adding an amendment, such as bonemeal, to the bottom of the planting hole. Water generously after planting to remove air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to encourage rooting.

Pruning English roses is essential for flowering. At the end of winter, shorten the branches to 3-5 buds above ground level (at the lowest), choosing an outward-facing bud for a more elegant habit. Take advantage of this pruning to remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Prune at an angle above a bud. As the flowers bloom, remove faded flowers, as this stimulates the development of other buds.

For climbing roses: the previous year's flowering stems should be reduced to 3 or 4 buds or pruned to 15cm (6in). The new strong stems should be tied and the old stems removed if necessary. Choose an outward-facing bud for a more elegant habit. Take advantage of this pruning to remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Prune at an angle above a bud. As the flowers bloom, remove faded flowers, as this stimulates the development of other buds.
