Description

We offer you this Countryside Duo, an ideal combination for lovers of bucolic settings. The rose bush produces purple, fragrant flowers from June to October. Paired with the majestic blue spikes of 'The Governor' lupins, it provides a harmony of colours and shapes to enliven the garden. The plants cover an area of about 1.5 m².

This Countryside Duo consists of:

- 1 Davis Austin Rose Bush, Rosa Munstead Wood: a bush with a rather wide and low habit, 80-90 cm tall, more suitable for borders. Its flowering is continuous from June to October, consisting of large, very double flowers in a beautiful intense and velvety purple. The strong scent emanating from the rose is also delightful, revealing warm and fruity notes of blueberry, blackberry, and plum.

- 3 lupins, Lupinus 'The Governor': these perennials stand up to 1 m tall, producing long floral spikes adorned with bicolour flowers, in a bright blue enhanced with white. Their palmate foliage is dark green, and their flowering extends from June to July, bringing a touch of height and freshness.

Plant this duo in spring or autumn, in a sunny bed or border. Maintain a spacing of 50 cm between each plant. Position the rose bush in the centre of the bed to slightly dominate, and plant the lupins around to add height and structure to the flowerbed.

Place this Countryside Duo in the background of a sunny flowerbed or in a large border. To enhance this duo, combine it with Nepeta 'Six Hills Giant', whose lavender blue softens the transition between the lupins and the rose bush. Add some Achillea 'Paprika' with red umbels, echoing the rose bush's flowers. Lastly, place a few clumps of perennial sage 'Caradonna' with purple spikes to enhance the harmony of tones. Plan for three plants of each variety for a perfect balance on an area of 3 m².

Planting and care

The duo of the rose 'Munstead Wood' and the lupins 'The Governor' thrives in sunny areas, where they benefit from at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. These plants appreciate rich, humus-bearing and well-drained soils, with a slight preference for slightly acidic to neutral soils. Regular, but moderate, watering is necessary, especially in dry periods, but make sure not to saturate the soil to avoid root rot problems. Mulching around the base of the plants helps retain moisture and limit weeds.

Care

Pruning instructions The 'Munstead Wood' rose requires annual pruning, ideally in late winter or early spring, before the vegetation starts. Remove dead, weak, or poorly oriented branches, and prune the main stems to about a third of their length to encourage abundant flowering. The 'The Governor' lupins can be pruned after flowering by cutting the faded flower stalks at the base, which promotes a new flowering at the end of the season. In winter, cut back the faded leaves of the lupins to ground level to maintain a neat appearance and promote regrowth in spring.
Pruning Pruning recommended twice a year
Pruning time March, August
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
