Description

Rose Guirlande d'Amour meaning 'Garland of Love' is a recent and highly floriferous variety that combines many qualities. This large, robust and repeat flowering rose can be trained as a climber but also makes a beautiful free-standing bush. Its exuberant and ramified growth produces long and arching branches that can reach 3 metres (10 feet) or more. In summer, it forms a mass of flowers from the base, covered with long bouquets of small white roses with yellow centres, semi-double and highly scented. It then repeats in autumn, until the first frost. This splendid variety also shows exceptional health, resulting in particularly healthy foliage.

This exceptional large rose was bred by Lens in 1993 and was awarded in Germany in 2012 under the ADR label, which has particularly demanding criteria for vigour, flowering and disease resistance. It can easily reach 2 to 3 metres (7 to 10 feet) in height with a spread of 1.50 to 2 metres (5 to 7 feet). Its long stems are arching and covered with abundant and very healthy medium-green foliage. The cream-white flowers of this repeat flowering variety are formed in abundance, first in June-July, then in September-October, sometimes until November if the autumn is mild. Gathered in long pyramid-shaped clusters, they are also particularly resistant to rain. They are born on short shoots from the 2nd year, as pale pink buds. They open into small semi-double roses with a diameter of 3 cm (1in), gathered in long bouquets along arching stems. Coquettish, simple, charming, they are surrounded by a gentle musky fragrance. The small fruits that birds enjoy in the winter are actually fleshy false fruits called hips. They contain a large quantity of single-seed achenes.

Rosa Guirlande d'Amour is an enchanting, generous and adorable rose. It lives up to its promises, to the point that its flowering cannot be forgotten. Like other climbers, it is incomparable for covering walls, fences and small pergolas, but its moderate growth also allows it to grow without support in a flowering hedge in the company of a vigorous clematis like 'Montana' or 'Prince Charles', to gracefully spread out on a lawn, or to be planted behind slightly too formal flowerbeds. It is an ideal companion for dead trees that it will revive, or for sheds to which it adds a charming touch. Trained on an arch, placed in a large pot on the patio, it will create a romantic and scented specimen.

Planting and care

Rosa Guirlande d'Amour adapts to all types of soil, even heavy or sandy, as long as the planting is taken care of and it is not lacking in water or nutrients. Plant it in well-worked and well-drained ordinary soil, in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Plant it in autumn, never when it is freezing.

Pruning: Keep the main branches of your rose to preserve its structure. Only remove the lateral branches, pruning them 3 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) from the main branches. This pruning helps rejuvenate the plant and promotes flower production at the base of the plant. Quite hardy, this rose can withstand temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F). It may be helpful to remove dead wood in winter and to remove faded flowers if you do not want fruit formation. If necessary, in spring, after the risk of frost, a light pruning can be done. Climbing roses can also be allowed to grow freely if you have ample space.

If you plant a climbing rose next to a living tree, the rose's root system will compete with that of the well-established tree. To control watering, a trick is to plant the rose in a large container with a perforated bottom, at the base of the tree: the tree roots will not penetrate the container for at least a year. Remove the container after 1 year, for example by cutting one side, without disturbing the rose's root system. By then, the rose will have had time to develop its root system deeply and will be more resistant.

Roses are often spotted or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose, it is a natural phenomenon.
