The rose bush arrived a bit too watered. Two weeks after planting it, it started to shoot and it is doing well. I will place another order in the spring as I have big plans for my new house.

Description

The 'Golden Gate' Climbing Rose is a superb variety that adds to the choices available in climbing roses. Forming a pyramid covered in flowers from May to October in just a few years, it stands out for its healthy foliage, vigorous growth, and excellent floribundity. These qualities have earned it the prestigious and highly demanding ADR label awarded in Germany for outstanding varieties. Its well-double yet light flowers are an elegant golden yellow, warm without being garish, and possess a surprising fresh lemon fragrance. So many qualities combined in one plant are reason enough to invite it to the garden without hesitation, provided that you like yellow flowers!

The 'Golden Gate' Climbing Rose 'Korgolgat' is part of the Super Conquerant series, a line of roses developed in Germany by Kordes for their climbing and vigorous growth, disease resistance, unparalleled floribundity, and charming appearance reminiscent of old roses. It belongs to the complex family of cluster-flowered roses. It was bred in 1995 and has also received awards from the RHS in England, as well as in the Netherlands and Italy. It is a sarmentous rose with exceptional vigour. It has a flexible habit and thorny stems, often reaching 3 metres (10 feet) (sometimes 3.5 metres (11 feet)) in height and 1 metre (3 feet) in width, depending on growing conditions. Its deciduous foliage, slightly glaucous green, is particularly healthy and perfectly showcases the gradient of yellow tones in the flowers, which become a pure yellow shade as they age, slightly lighter. It blooms continuously from May to September, abundantly if it is not lacking water. Its large roses, grouped in clusters of 5 to 10 double, slightly blurry flowers, with a width of 8-9 cm (3-4in), consist of 20 to 39 petals.

Their fragrance, complex, unusual, and captivating, has been described as follows: "the top note initially recalls lime and lemon zest, then freshly picked lemongrass. The heart note evokes an exotic aroma of green banana. Some specimens have a powerful fragrance of tropical flowers. There remains a note of ripe banana that completes its exceptional exotic character".

Super Conquerant roses deserve a wall exposed to the morning sun or a structure large enough to support their shower of flowers. They allow for sumptuous displays throughout the summer period, requiring very little maintenance, apart from regular watering in summer during periods of high heat and prolonged drought. Mix or combine them with easy-to-grow large-flowered clematis such as 'Etoile Violette' or 'Broughton Star'. They are also good companions for paniculate phlox, delphiniums, foxgloves, catmints, and tall baby's breath.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Golden Gate' rose from November to March in ordinary, well-loosened and drained soil. Roses prefer clay soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is preferable to bury compost or well-rotted manure at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose fears waterlogged soils in winter. Install it about 20 cm (8in) from its support, in a sunny location, or at most in partial shade. Roses are hungry plants; using a rose fertiliser will be beneficial at the start of vegetation and should be used regularly throughout the flowering. To encourage regrowth, regularly remove faded flowers.

Roses may appear stained or unsightly at the end of summer. However, it is a natural phenomenon that doesn't harm their development.

Care

Pruning instructions Floribunda roses are more vigorous and have more flowers than large-flowered roses. Therefore, at the end of winter, their stems should be pruned to about a quarter of their length, leaving 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem. Always prune above an outward-facing bud so the bush can grow outwards and avoid tangled branches in the centre. 'Golden Gate' roses are exceptionally vigorous and can be pruned every five years.

Disease resistance Very good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
