What a magnificent rose bush, living up to all its promises. Planted in May 2022, it already fills its spot in the flower bed. The young plant is growing so quickly that the branches are sagging a bit, but it will surely strengthen and straighten up, just like the Queen of Sweden plant that was planted a year earlier. Thank you for the quality of your plants." Analyse et correction : "What a magnificent rose bush, living up to all its promises. Planted in May 2022, it already fills its spot in the flower bed. Description

The English rose 'Olivia Rose Austin' has received much praise since its introduction. According to its creator, it is one of the best varieties and one of the most resistant in his entire collection. Its large flowers evoke old roses, beautiful at all stages of their blooming, opening in light but very full and large cups. Their diaphanous petals display a delightful soft pink hue, paler at the edges, and hide an intense fragrance in the secret of their heart, with well-marked fruity notes. This rose is named after the English breeder's granddaughter, proof, if any, of the attachment he has for her!

The National Horticultural Society of France awarded this excellent rose. Of modest size, it is, however, endowed with particularly vigorous growth and will form a well-balanced bush, 1 m (3ft) in height and 75 cm (30in) in spread. Its sturdy stems are covered with glossy foliage, green with bronze and purple highlights, typical of the Leander group, disease-free. Its flowering is particularly early and repeats three times a year, early in the season and until late autumn. On this repeat flowering bush, the tiny bright pink buds beautifully curved open very gradually to form a round and full flower over 8 cm (3in), composed of many petals organised in quarters. They have a transparent and fresh colour, a light and bright pink, taking on lilac reflections at full bloom and a delicious and fruity fragrance.

As Wilhelm Kordes, the famous German breeder, said so beautifully, "Think that roses are part of those intangible elements that define the level of our culture. (...) Because the rose is the most perfect expression, even the symbol of a noble lady: tenderness, beauty, grace, elegance, sweetness and charm all at once." This quote fits perfectly with this beautiful rose, Olivia Rose Austin' or 'Ausmixture', which will find its place in both a romantic and natural garden or even in a scented garden. It can be mixed with flowering shrubs (buddleias, lilacs, spireas, deutzias, mock oranges, kolkwitzias) near the house or in front of a large bed. It will accompany perennial plants in mixed borders, bringing vitality and fragrance, light annuals, and even grasses, whose tufted foliage will adorn its base.

Obtained by David Austin in 2014.

Planting and care

Plant your English Rose Olivia Rose Austin in a location that receives ample sunlight or is lightly shaded. English roses are tolerant to different soil types but do not thrive in soil with excessive limestone. These roses can grow in any garden if the soil is well-worked, not too heavy, and rich enough. To plant your rose, crumble the soil and add an amendment, such as blood, fish and bone, to the bottom of the planting hole. After planting, water generously to remove any pockets of air, and regularly for the first few weeks to help with rooting.

Pruning English roses is essential for better flowering. At the end of winter, in February-March, shorten the branches to 3-5 buds above the ground (at the lowest), choosing an outward-facing bud for a more elegant look. While pruning, remove any dead wood and unsightly branches. Make sure to prune at a slant above a bud. As the flowers bloom, remove faded flowers to stimulate the development of other buds.

Roses often have stains or may look unsightly towards the end of summer. However, this is not a problem for their development. These stains are natural and do not harm the rose.
