Description

The 'Remembrance' Rose has a very nice name, translated into French as "Souvenir". This small rose, rewarded for its floribundity and natural resistance to diseases, offers a dazzling flowering for 4 to 5 months in clusters of double flowers, with a fresh scent of wild rose, of a sublime scarlet red enhanced by an elegant dark and glossy foliage. This almost maintenance-free variety, which requires very little space but is covered in a shower of flowers, easily fits into a small garden or even in a container on the terrace.

The 'Remembrance' Rose or 'Harxampton' is an English creation by Harkness, dating back to 1992. It belongs to the category of floribunda roses, with flowers grouped in large corymbs at the end of young shoots. This fast-growing variety forms a compact bush with thorny stems, 60 cm (24in) tall and 50 cm (20in) wide. It is covered with foliage divided into 5 thick and toothed leaflets, with a shiny dark green colour in summer. Its flowering is abundant from June to October. Its corollas, 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) wide, are double, composed of 26 to 40 petals, gathered in long bouquets of several flowers in informal cups, with a natural appearance. Their colour is a very bright red and perfectly uniform, well highlighted by the shiny dark green foliage. The scent is fresh and light, very pleasant.

Floribunda roses allow for the creation of beautiful small hedges planted mixed at the edge of the terrace or in small shrub beds. Combine them with abelias, nandinas, or caryopteris, for example. They are good companions for phlox paniculata and tall baby's breath. The modest size and undeniable splendour of the 'Remembrance' Rose make it an interesting variety for gardens where space is limited and for growing in large pots. Its uses are varied, according to the desires of each gardener; it can even be mixed with easy-to-grow perennials such as 'Blue Cloud' or 'Orion' geraniums, astrantias, foxgloves, campanulas or asters.

Planting and care

When planting the floribunda rose 'Remembrance' or 'Harxampton', choose a spot with well-prepared, ordinary, well-drained soil. Roses do well in heavier, clayey soils. For sandy, compact, or dry soil, add compost or well-rotted manure to the bottom of the planting hole. Avoid waterlogged soil during winter. The rose needs a sunny or partially shaded spot. Use a specific fertiliser at the beginning of vegetation and regularly during the flowering period, as roses are greedy plants.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.

Care

Pruning instructions To help your roses grow better, it's important to remove dead flowers often. Floribunda roses are a good choice because they produce many more flowers than hybrid tea roses. In late winter, cut back the stems by about a quarter (from 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem). Cut above an outward-facing bud to encourage the plant to grow more branches and prevent tangles in the centre.
