Description

The 'Scentimental' Floribunda Rose is a beautiful American creation that is highly regarded by gardeners: with its unique raspberry scent, its well-double roses, randomly variegated with red, pink, and pale white, are both romantic and vibrant. Not very tall but endowed with strong vigour and healthy, glossy foliage, it blooms generously throughout the summer. This new rose with the appearance of an English or old-fashioned rose is a true gem for the garden and homemade bouquets.

The Rosa 'Scentimental' is a creation by Tom Carruth (United States) dating back to 1997. Its name 'Scentimental' is a play on words between "sentimental", for the romantic look of its roses, and "scent", for their exceptional fragrance. It is the result of cross-breeding between the 'Play boy' and 'Peppermint Twist' roses, which gave it the variegated colour of its flowers. This variety, which has received numerous awards, has been particularly distinguished by the prestigious American AARS. It is part of the floribunda cultivars, obtained through the hybridisation of polyantha roses and tea roses.

'Scentimental' forms a compact bush with a dense habit, reaching approximately 80 cm (32in) in height and 70 cm (28in) in width. Its strong and thorny stems bear very healthy foliage, with a beautiful glossy dark green colour. Its flowering is highly recurrent, lasting 4 to 5 months. This bush continuously produces deep double corollas measuring 7 cm (3in) in diameter, clustered in terminal bouquets. Each flower is different, more or less striped with raspberry red and fuchsia pink on a white to white-pink background. Its fruity fragrance is very pronounced: rare in the world of roses, it reveals a surprising sweet note of raspberry, long-lasting and mouth-watering.

Plant this 'Scentimental' rose near a pathway to enjoy the scent of its roses as often as possible. Floribunda and polyantha roses allow for the creation of beautiful small hedges, planted in a mix along the edge of the terrace or in beds of moderately-sized shrubs. They can also be combined with dwarf abelias, shrubby potentillas, perennial or shrubby salvias, and even caryopteris, for example. They make good companions for delphiniums, panicle phlox, and tall gypsophila. The unusual colour of the 'Scentimental®' roses pairs well with varieties with pink flowers ('The Fairy', 'Maman Turbat', 'Fairy Rood'), white flowers ('Marie Pavie', 'Little White Pet'), or even red to purple flowers ('Purple Lodge', 'Merveille des Rouges'). Its compact growth allows for container cultivation, provided there is regular watering and fertiliser applications.

Planting and care

Plant the floribunda rose 'Scentimental' from November to March, in ordinary, well-loosened and free-draining soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is preferable to bury compost, decomposed manure or leaf-mould at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dreads waterlogged soils in winter. Place it in a sunny position, at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific rose fertiliser application will be beneficial when the foliage emerges, then regularly during the entire flowering period.

To encourage re-blooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, the stems should be pruned to about a quarter of their length (4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud, so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the shrub.
