Description

The Friendly 'Purple Meicosme' Rose Bush is a shrub rose created by Meilland for its aesthetic and ecological qualities. It bears intense fuchsia wild rose flowers with a bright white center, adorned with a cluster of yellow stamens. Rich in pollen and nectar, before transforming into vermilion red hips, they bring joy to pollinators and birds. Very easy to grow and highly disease-resistant, this vigorous and perfectly healthy variety has received the prestigious German A.D.R* label.

The Friendly Rose Bush 'Purple Meicosme' bears flowers grouped in terminal clusters, ranging from 3 to 25 units, inherited from the polyantha rose, an old hybrid resulting from Rosa multiflora and R. chinensis. It is part of the Meillandecor® landscape roses series. It offers plants with exceptional natural resistance to diseases and parasites, with almost permanent decorative effect, dense foliage, and abundant and continuous flowering until the first frost. The roses in the Friendly range have a very bushy habit, as wide as they are tall, reaching about 80 cm (32in) to 1m (3ft) in all directions when fully grown. They develop deciduous, matte green foliage, absent during winter. The single flowers, 5 to 6 cm (2in) in diameter, with five petals, resemble ancestral wild roses. They bloom in great numbers in large pyramidal clusters from May to October-November, as long as there is no frost. 'Purple Meicosme' has an intense and bright fuchsia colour, marked with white.

This Friendly 'Purple Meicosme' Rose Bush is part of an ecological approach in the garden, where pesticide treatments are unnecessary, wildlife is welcome, and flowering is abundant. Maintenance involves occasional watering during dry periods and annual pruning. This hardy and versatile plant thrives in any climate and soil that is not too dry or poor. This shrub rose is a companion for natural gardens, with a rustic or slightly wild appearance. It can be integrated into flower beds, low hedges, or planted in groups of 3. Choose diverse companion shrubs, such as Evergreen Ceanothus, Vitex, buddleias. Add perennials and self-seeding annuals, melliferous and low-maintenance, along with naturalising bulbs and grasses.

* The German ADR label rewards roses that are naturally resistant to diseases, parasites, and pollution. To obtain this label, varieties are tested without any pesticide treatment in 11 trial stations across Germany for a period of 3 years.

Planting and care

Roses prefer a sunny location (at least 4 to 5 hours of sunshine daily) but sheltered from the burning midday rays and strong winds. Roses appreciate loose, permeable, and humus-rich soil. They prefer slightly acidic soil but will adapt to any garden if the soil is well-worked and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose in a pot, prepare the soil in a 25 cm (10in) cube by crumbling the soil and placing a base amendment such as blood, fish and bone at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, removed from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. During dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate rooting. Also, remember to provide your rose with a special rose fertiliser that stimulates plant flowering.
