Description

The 'Bordure d'Or' Rose bush, with its large sun-like flowers, creates borders and flower pots full of joy from May to September. It bears a multitude of beautifully formed and large double roses for a polyantha. Its beautiful matte and dark foliage, which is not very susceptible to diseases, perfectly highlights its long flowering period. This flowering and carefree rose bush can fit anywhere: in borders, flower beds, small hedges, on the terrace or balcony.

The flowers of the 'Bordure d'Or' Rose bush, gathered in small terminal bouquets of 4 to 6 flowers, come from the polyantha rose, an old hybrid derived from Rosa multiflora and Rosa chinensis. Well-branched, it has a bushy dome-shaped habit, as wide as it is tall. It will not exceed 60 cm (24in) in all directions. The nicely double cup-shaped flowers, beautifully turbinate, emerge from pointed and orange buds. They open up with a very warm and vibrant yellow colour, while revealing their orange heart populated with golden yellow stamens. They bloom in large numbers in pyramidal bouquets carried by stiff and sturdy stems. The flowering begins in May-June, renews more sporadically during the hottest months, and then takes a new breath in September. This vigorous variety develops deciduous, matte, dark green foliage. Its stems bear thorns. This variety has received 1 medal and is not very susceptible to diseases.

The robust 'Bordure d'Or' rose bush adapts to all soils that are not too dry and prefers fertile and deep soils. Its dense and low habit, with a tidy appearance, works wonders in rockeries or on a slope where it will cover the ground. It can also be planted in groups of 3 plants, arranged in a triangle, isolated on a lawn. Plant it en masse along pathways or to accentuate shrub beds. It will integrate perfectly with light or opulent perennial beds and can be paired with other dwarf roses like 'Bordure Blanche', 'Bordure Nacrée', or 'Bordure vive', according to each gardener's taste. For example, it can be associated with perennial geraniums (Geranium 'Blue Cloud', 'Anne Folkard', 'Nimbus', 'Orion', 'Rozanne'), campanulas (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, snapdragons, foxgloves, or other carnations. It is naturally perfect for decorating the terrace or balcony, planted in a beautiful pot, a large basin, or a planter.

Obtained by Delbard (France) in 1985.

Planting and care

Rose bushes prefer a sunny location (at least 4 to 5 hours of sun per day) but sheltered from the scorching midday rays and strong winds. They appreciate loose, permeable, deep, and fertile soils. They prefer a neutral to slightly acidic soil, but they will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well-worked and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose bush in a pot, prepare your soil by loosening it to a depth of 25 cm (10in), and place a base amendment such as dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, removed from its pot, and cover the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole and water generously to eliminate air pockets. During dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root development. Remember to also provide your rose bush with special rose fertiliser to stimulate flowering.
