Description

The 'Indian Silk' rose bush is one of the very few varieties of miniature roses with a beautifully scented flowering. It is a small bush full of life, with a perpetual flowering habit, and its adorable little roses are just as impressive as those of larger-flowered varieties. This variety works wonders in pots, borders, and flower beds...

The 'Indian Silk' rose bush was bred by L. Lens in 1991. This variety belongs to the category of polyanthas and floribundas that produce flowers in clusters. The bush shows rapid growth and a particularly compact habit. Eventually, it reaches about 35-40 cm (14-16in) in height and 30 cm (12in) in width. Its leaves are divided into elliptical leaflets, dark green, matte, and resistant to diseases. Flowering begins in June. It continues throughout the summer if you regularly remove faded clusters. The flowers are double, measuring 3 cm (1in) in diameter. They are white with a touch of creamy pink in the centre and have a strong fragrance. Hardy to -10 °C (14°F).

The miniature rose 'Indian Silk' is perfect in a beautiful pot on the patio, but it can also be used in a small romantic bed or as a border plant in regions with milder climates. Pair it with pink groundcover roses (Maman Turbat, The Fairy) or white ones (Opalia, Escimo, Rose du Soleil) to highlight the path of a walkway or shrub beds. It can also be combined with perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), catmints, or other perennial salvias. It pairs perfectly with bush roses with pink or white flowers in a romantic garden.

Planting and care

Rose bushes prefer a sunny location (at least 4 to 5 hours of sun per day) but sheltered from the scorching midday rays and strong winds. They appreciate loose, permeable, and nutrient-rich soil. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well cultivated and sufficiently rich. To plant your Indian Silk rose, prepare your soil by working it to a depth of 25 cm (10in), crumble the soil well, and place a bottom layer of organic fertiliser such as bonemeal. Position your plant, remove it from its pot, and cover the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole, tamp down the soil, and water generously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, it is important to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. Additionally, remember to provide your rose bush with special rose fertiliser to stimulate flowering.

Rose bushes are often spotted or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose bush, as they are a natural phenomenon.
